Monumental Inscriptions of Fort Pitt Military Cemetery, Rochester - recorded by D. E. Williams 2009

Introduction
The cemetery appears to date from the opening of the hospital at Fort Pitt in the 1840’s.
The original portion is that lying south of the present main entrance from City Way, (Section A).
The oldest surviving memorial is to John Potter, who died 5th January 1847, two other memorials date from the same year, and the absence of earlier memorials, suggests that the cemetery was operational from c. 1846. Expansion to the north eventually followed, and the northern-most part is in use today. In 1909 a large monument to casualties of the Crimea War and Indian Mutiny was built, close to the present entrance; a small weather-boarded chapel is positioned about the middle of the cemetery. A standard 1st World War stone "Cross of Sacrifice" is also situated in the cemetery.
The sections are my own and do not relate to any official sections.

D.L. Williams 2009

Section A  is to the south of the entrance, is the oldest part. Because of the rather scattered nature of the monuments in this section, I have listed them alphabetically and not by position.

Section B  has far fewer monuments, a row against the hedge, east of the chapel; a group just south of the chapel, and one behind the chapel.

Section C   & Section D   lie to the north of the chapel, behind the hedge. These sections contain mostly C.W.G.C. monuments, which can be found on the Internet, and are excluded from this survey.

Section E  lies to the north of the next hedge.

The monuments in Section B are also listed alphabetically, those in Sections C and D by rows. The rows are numbered east to west, the graves from south to north.
There was one headstone (in Section B) which was face down but this was lifted and found to be completely eroded.
A few stones are more or less illegible but where the name is legible, I have included it, even if the rest of the detail has perished.

While crossing a deep ditch on a spar bridge, during a practise assault, Marchment and his fellow marines were, somehow held up and bunched together at one end of the bridge. Unable to take such a concentrated weight at one point, the bridge broke, causing the marines to fall into the ditch. Unfortunately, during the siege operations, bayonets were fixed, and Marchment received a severe bayonet wound in his chest, from which, he soon died. The Inquest Jury returned a verdict of "Accidental Death"

ACCIDENTALLY KILLED IN A MOTOR COLLISION

The Times, March 18th 1908

LIEUTENANT ANTHONY CARROW, a promising young officer in the Royal Engineers, met with a shocking death on the Rainham-road, Gillingham, on Sunday evening. He and another officer had been out for a day’s run on a tandem motor-bicycle, and at Rainham, on the return journey, a puncture occurred. The friend decided to return by train, but Mr. Carrow continued the journey on the bicycle. He had not proceeded more than two miles when he came violently into collision with a four-wheeled van which was proceeding in the opposite direction. The officer sustained terrible injuries to his head, and was conveyed in a motor-car to Rochester Hospital, where on admission he was found to be dead. The motor-bicycle was smashed almost to atoms. Lieutenant Carrow who was 21, was educated at Clifton College, and graduated first from the Royal Military Academy in 1906, with over 1,000 marks above the officer who took second place. In his last term he secured the Armstrong memorial and the prize for mathematics, mechanics, and electricity. He was, at the time of his death, completing his initial course at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham.

YOUNG OFFICER MISSING IN THE MEDWAY
Second-Lieutenant Christopher H. Minton-Senhouse and Second-Lieutenant Peter M. M. Moore, both of the Royal Engineers, were sailing a dinghy on the Medway near Gillingham on Saturday when the boat grounded on a mudbank and overturned. They attempted to swim ashore, but as Mr. Minton-Senhouse was showing signs of exhaustion his friend helped him back to the boat, where he left him clinging to the keel. Mr. Moore then swam to the shore for assistance, but on returning with a boatman found that Mr. Minton-Senhouse was missing. Mr. Minton-Senhouse, a young officer, was gazetted recently. He joined the Royal Engineers Depot at Chatham a few weeks ago.
