   To grand children, Mary and Elizabeth Bonniwell, daughters of son William, 20/- each. To grandson, James Bonniwell, son of son James, deceased, 20/-. To kins woman Elizabeth Duning ?, "that dwelleth with me", 20s.
   Residue, including stock in trade, "shares and parts of hoyes or vessels", to son Thomas, who is executor.

   To Abraham Webb, "a bill of work, money and settery ?" and interest on bond of £200. Residue to his two daughters, equally.
   Simon Rouse, Butcher and William Turner, Blacksmith are executors, for each of them, 10gns.
   To the Minister to preach funeral sermon, 1gn.

Edgar Buss, died 1900, was the son of Thomas of Eccles, a Boiler Maker's Labourer (1891 Census)
His Inquest was reported in the Kent Messenger:
   "DROWNED WHILE BATHING. --- Mr T. Buss, County Coroner, held an inquest at the Chequers Inn, on Saturday, respecting the death of Edgar Isaac Buss, aged 13, son of Thos, Ed. Buss, skilled labourer, at Eccles, who was drowned in the Medway at Aylesford while bathing with other lads. Mr Ballard was foreman of the jury. The father stated that he had cautioned deceased about bathing in the river. There was no doubt that the boy wanted to be able to swim like his elder brother. Hubert Oliver, the son of an Eccles grocer, stated that he and deceased and another boy named Wallis, entered the river on Thursday afternoon some distance above Aylesford bridge. Witness could swim and so could deceased, a little. About ten minutes after they had been in the water, witness heard the deceased cry out "Help ! Help !". He and Wallis tried to reach him , but could not. Witness saw him go under three times. By the Coroner: Witness and other boys had bathed at the same place before. He should think deceased was seized with cramp.
   Walter Hadlow, bargeman, of Cook's Wharf, Rochester, stated that he dragged for the body for a considerable time on Thursday night. On the following morning he found deceased on a mud bank, resting on his hands and knees about 20 yards from the place where the boys had been bathing.
   Dr Fiske proved that death was due to suffocation by drowning, there being no marks of violence on the body.
   A juror suggested that the Coroner might ask the Navigation Company to take steps to prevent boys from bathing in the river. Mr Buss, however, said he was afraid that if he made such a representation to the Company it would have very little effect.
   The jury then returned a verdict of "Accidentally drowned ""

   To John Farncomb his 2 gold rings "I had at the burials of Sir John Banks and Mr Caleb Banks". Also to    John all his properties in Aylesford occupied by James Taylor, Thomas Cook , Thomas Goodman and --------- Woolett, for ever; chargeable with an annuity of £5 for Elizabeth Farncomb for life.
   Residue to his grand children, James, John, Augustine, Thomas and Robert Taylor equally shared.

   To executors, £1,600 at 3¼% Bank Annuities; part of stock in joint names of himself and wife Phoebe, upon trust. Wife to have dividends for life. After her death, the same stock shared equally between sons, Henry and Edward.
   All his interest and term in public house in which he lives at Mill Hall and house contents and residue of above stock, to son Henry.
   To son Edward 3 properties in Aylesford Street, occupied by William Meopham, Charles Copper and Ann Belton, for ever. Also to Edward £700 in the Branch Bank, Maidstone; insurance policy of £500 in the Kent Life and Fire Assurance Office, Maidstone, and all bonuses.

Thomas Madgin, died 1680, a Tailor; Churchwarden c. 1652, name on Church bell of that date
   We know Madgin was a Tailor because of a extraordinary accusation against his wife in 1656. The following is from the West Kent Quarter Sessions records in the Kent County Archives (Ref: Q/SB 1656)

The informacion of Jane Webbe, the wife of John Webbe of Aylesford, butcher, taken upon oath this 28th day of February 1655 (1656) George Duke, Magistrate
   Who saith upon her oath that her said husband, John Webbe, came home on Tewesday night last and said he was poysoned by Jane Madgin, the wife of Thomas Madgin of the same, taylor, who gave him poyson in a cup of beere and this informate further sayeth upon her oath that the said John Webbe hath kepth his bedde since and hath been very ill and that throughout Tewesday night he vometted a great deale.

Statement of Ellen Gervase, widow of Aylesford:
   Who saith that on Tewesday night last shee being at Mrs Margaret Thorroughgood's house, Jane Madgin came in and presently after came in John Webbe, who called for a pott of beere and dranke of it to Mrs Thorroughgood who dranke to Jane Madgin and shee to John Webbe a who[le] little pott of beere and then shee the said Jane Madgin filled the said little pott with beere and gave it to John Webbe and as soon ashe had dranke the beere in the said little pott he cryed out presently he was poysoned, whereon this informate said to him "Give me the pott", and shee looked into it and said "There is a foule peece of worke between you for here is poyson in the pott" and then this informate carryed the said little pott away which is the pott shee bought to me and saith upon her owne knowledge that the white stuffe therin is white mercury and that is the stuffe that was in the pott when shee tooke it out of John Webbe his hand.

Statement of Jane Madgin:
   Who confesseth that on Tewesday night last shee was at Mrs Margaret Thoroughgood's house in Aylesford aforesiad having heard the widow Gervace, her voice there, and after shee had sett downe by the fier a while came in John Webbe of the same, butcher and called for some beere and dranke to her and other in the company and shee the said Jane Madgin dranke to him and filled the pott with beere and gave it into his hand and he after a little while holding it in his hande dranke and as swoone as he had dranke poured some of the beere upon the ground and swore there was poyson in the pott, there was white mercury in it. Upon which Ellen Gervace, the widow, being there in company desired to see the pott and this examnate desired likewise to see it but they refused to lett her looke into it, but the said Ellen Gervace said there was something that was white in it and then the said Gervace or John Webbe carryed the pott away.
   The said examinatt further saith that about a fortnight since shee bought a pennyworth of rattsbane of Mr Henden but having broken the paper in her pockett soe as some of the rattsbane mingled among the reasons of the same that were in the same pockett, she flung the said reisons and rattsbane but saith shee told noebody of this her doing, only tolde her childe shee had lost the plums and further saith that she bought the rattsbane to kill mice.

Statement of Mr John Henden, Apothecary of Maidstone:
   Who having seen the white stuffe that was left in the foresaid little pott wherein John Webbe had drunke saith that he cannot positively say but doth beleeve that it is arsnicke commonly called rattsbane and further saith that within three weeks last past he sold unto Jane Madgin one pennyworth or two of rattsbane and further saith not.

Jane Madgin was indicted for a misdemeanour (not attempted murder), a summons was issued, but no more is known, except that John Webb was bound over, charged with being a common drunkard and using threatening words against Thomas Madgin!

Daniel Stuart, died 1791, Hop Merchant of Maidstone, (Register), P.C.C. Will dated 21st December 1790
   Appoints nephew Archibald Morton, Merchant of Wellingborough, Northants, and friend John Seager, Brewer of Maidstone, executors.
   To wife Elizabeth annuity of £70 for life, out of several properties in or near Rochester, in occupation of Israel Levi and others, and from interest of money in Public Funds, sufficient sums transferred to executors and wife, in trust, with rents of properties to pay annuity.
   This annuity taken in lieu of any dower rights she may be entitled to by the customs of Kent. To wife all household goods and effects in house which were hers at time of marriage. She to have use of all other household goods. After her death, goods to residue of estate.
   To Ann Stuart, and Agnes, wife of John Morrison, the daughters of late brother John, £100 each.
   To James Stuart, illegitimate son of James, late son of brother John, £300, to John Stuart, another son of James, 3500 at 21 years.
   To Robert Clark who married late Jane Stuart, daughter of late brother Robert, £10. To their son Alexander Stuart, £500. To their daughter ------- Stuart, £30. To Rev. William Stuart son of late brother Charles, £40. To Janet Stuart, daughter of brother Charles, £40. To Mary Stuart wife of William Williams, daughter of late brother David, £20. To Ann Stuart another daughter of David, wife of ----------- ? annuity of £7 for life.
   To Janet daughter of Archibald Morton of Westmuir, near Glasgow, and sister of executor Archibald Morton, £50.
   To child/children of late Agnes Morton, wife of Walter Rankin, another sister of his executor, Morton, £100, shared equally at 21.
   To Jane Stuart daughter of his brother John, annuity of £6 for life. To George and Samuel Wilkins, sons of his wife, Elizabeth, and to Rev. Mr Relph, Minister of the Dissenting Meeting he attends in Maidstone, if he is Minister at time of his death, £20 each
   To executor John Seager £10 for mourning and to the poor of Dissenting Meeting, £5 shared as executor thinks fit.
   To Donald Russell, son of Ann Morton by husband James Russell, £50 at 21, in meantime, interest to his maintenance and education.
   To Kitty and Harriett Wilkins, daughters of his wife Elizabeth, £30 each, within 12 months of death of wife.
   To James Wilkins, son of wife, interest of £60 for life. After his death the £60 to his siblings.
   To William and Charles Morton sons of executor, his interest in properties, late the estate of Sir Edward Austen, Bart., and Dame Susanna, his wife, given to John Amherst, Esq., since purchased by Daniel Stuart, and his share of other freehold and leasehold estates of the late Sir Edward Austen, since purchased by Stuart. Also to William and Charles, his share of property in Bearstead, late belonging to John Kenteins?, of Bearstead, for ever, interest from the property for their maintenance and education, until 21 years.
   To executors properties in Rochester occupied by Israel Levi and other properties in Rochester, chargeable with annuity of £70 to wife. Residue to Archibald Morton.

Codicil dated 12th January 1791
   Had given wife household goods for life, he now revokes this. Now gives all household goods except bureau and bookcase in his bedroom with the books, and plate in house; she may sell rest of goods. Rest of will stands.
   Witnesses: John Seager and Jno. Roffe
   Proved 3rd August 1791. Power reserved to John Seager.

James Dowd, died 1831, former Soldier, Lieutenant 1st Veterans Battalion, of Hook Wood Cottage, Maidstone. His P.C.C. Will is dated 25th October 1831
   His friends, George Hubbard of Maidstone, Post Master and Simon Nicolls, Esq., of Lougford, County of Lougford, Ireland, are his executors and trustees.
   His property to be sold and proceeds added to other money, including that in Maidstone Savings Bank; this devolves to George Hubbard because he is resident in Maidstone.
   To 2 sons and daughter of late sister Winifred, Mrs Manaway of Castlereagh, £20 each.
   To 2 daughters of late brother, John Dowd, of the Scotch Quarters near Lougford,,£20 each.
   To the 5 daughters of Hugh Lee by his sister, Margaret,£20 each.
   Remaining money to be placed in the Long Annuities until death of Hugh Lee and sister Margaret. The half yearly dividends to be paid to the Lees to "enable them support so large a family". After the Lees die, annuities to be sold, proceeds divided between the Lees 3 sons. To his executors £5 each.

   Executors have renounced administration. Granted to Hugh Lee and James Lee, representing Margaret Lee, now resident of Soran Coid near Lougford.

   Wife Charlotte Elizabeth and friends Richard Phillips of Brompton, Carpenter and Builder and Henry Morris of Aylesford, Surveyor, are executors, trustees and guardians.
   To wife, for life, 2 houses in Aylesford, occupied by Mrs Mary Charlton, widow and ---------- ?, and house on west side of Stone Street, at foot of Gabriel's Hill, Maidstone, occupied by David ------- ?; house in Sandgate, and land of 8 acres "upon the hill", in Burham occupied by George Pope; 4 new cottages in Burham occupied by William Taylor and others; his half of 4 acres at Rocky Hill in Maidstone occupied by Isaac Bradford; income to be used for his childrens' support and education until 21. Wife to keep all property in good repair.
   After her death to children in equal shares, for ever, subject to annuity of £30 to his good friend Mary Gibbons. Provision made for his wife in lieu of any further claims. Son Richard by former wife, Catherine, is entitled, under his great grandfather's will, (Thomas Evernden), a house and farm lands in Langley occupied by Robert Cullow. To son Richard, his 2 houses in the "Bowling Alley", in Aylesford, occupied by the Misses Barnes and Daniel Spong; and 11 cottages and carpenter's shop and yard, in the "Bowling Alley", for ever.
   If Richard dies before 21 with no heirs, property to be shared among children by his wife Charlotte.
   To friend Mary Gibbons of Sutton Valence, Spinster, debts owed him by , if she survives his wife. She to have annuity of £30 for life, charged upon his properties, after her death to her children.
   To servant James Tomand?, annuity of £10 for life, out of personal estate.
Residue to wife, son Richard and all his children equally.

Augustine Taylor, died 1699, Gentleman Rochester Will dated 20th August 1698
  To sons John and Augustine his dwelling house, barns, stables, outhouses, oast house, lands and properties on them, amounts to 100 acres in Aylesford. Also part of the Common called Aylesford Common, with all rights, purchased from Sir John Sidly, Bart., subject to an annuity of £20, charge on properties by late father, John, to such person or persons by an Indenture of Settlement , to him and his wife before their marriage.
   To sons John and Augustine,for ever, land of 23 acres called Kitts Cote House, and one piece called the Cams, adjoining latter, about 15 acres.
   Another piece of land called Burham Shott, of 24 acres adjoining Kitts Cote House, and Lower Lanhham of 5 acres, adjoining lane leading to the Warren, and another called Upper Langham, of 7 acres, adjoining Warren House.
   Also Warren House, with barn and land of 50 acres, with Common rights, all in Aylesford and Burham, occupied by the testator and Henry Fletcher. Also cottage in Wouldham Street, Wouldham. His sons to pay from latter 20s per annum to poor of Aylesford and 10s to poor of Meopham, according to the will of his grandfather James Taylor.
   To son James house and garden, orchard in Wouldham occupied by John Keble, purchased of Francis Harris, for ever.
   His nephew, Augustine Taylor, for the consideration of £40, already paid to him, has agreed to convey a house in Aylesford, occupied by John Field and widow Hackett, assigned to him by nephews, John , James and Thomas Taylor brothers of Augustine (who is a minor), are bound to him in sum of £80. Property conveyed to son James, or his executors, in trust for James. Also to James, the obligation that his nephews are bound in.
   His wife, Mary, shall convey to herself property in Halling, occupied by George Musye?, for her life; after her death to son James; also to James annuity of £10 from his dwelling house and land belonging, during the life of his wife.
   To daughter Elizabeth a woodland called Pottkin Wood of 25 acres in Aylesford, adjoining Burham Common to the south. She is to release executors from £100 charged on the woodland by his late father John's will. She also gets £150 at 21 years, in meantime interest for her maintenance.
   To son John £100. To son James £50 to be invested for his benefit until he is 21.
   To poor of Aylesford 40s.
   Residue to sons John and Augustine, equally.
   Wife Mary and father in law John Tomlyn executors.
   His "loving kinsmen" Robert Taylor and Thomas Knowlden are Overseers.

   To son Augustine his house, with barns, stables, hop houses and 100 acres in Aylesford; part of Aylesford Common, purchased of Sir John Sidley, Bart., also land of 23 acres called Kitts Cotthouse, another 15 acres, adjoining called the Cams; another of 24 acres, adjoining, called Burham Shott, in Aylesford and Burham; another of 5 acres called Lower Laughamton, in Aylesford, to a lane at the gate called Warren Gate; another of 7 acres called Upper Laughamton, adjoining Warren House; also Warren House and barn and land of 50 acres, with Common rights, occupied by James Paine; house in Wouldham Street in Wouldham; out of latter Augustine to pay 20s to poor of Aylesford and 10s to poor of Meopham, as laid out in will of his father, James Taylor. These properties to Augustine for ever.
   He also gets Pottkin Wood of 24 acres in Aylesford adjoining Burham Common, Augustine to pay from this wood to Elizabeth Taylor, Augustine's daughter, £100 at 20 years. If she does not get the £100 she can distrain wood until she gets enough rent to cover the £100. After £100 is paid wood to Augustine for ever. To grandson James Taylor, for ever, house and orchard called Hubbards late occupied by John Chowning; another house with barn, garden and orchard, occupied by Richard Archer, both in Aylesford. In Snodland, a house with barn stable, orchard and 2 pieces of land of 4 acres, with Common rights, occupied by John Taylor, and 1 piece of reed land of 3 acres, on Snodland side but in Burham parish, occupied by ------- Row, it adjoins reed land of Sir John Banks, on the north and River Medway on the east; also land called Sawbins of 2 acres, adjoining land of Sir Charles Sidley, to the east and to land of Robert Edmunds to the west.
   To grandson James Taylor 2nd son of James Taylor,forever, woodland "on the hill" in Aylesford of 43 acres, called Impton Wood, adjoining land of Sir Charles Sidley, on north, and west, to land of of Sir Richard Head, on east; and 2 pieces of woodland called Tottentons Wood of 22 acres in Aylesford, to the lands of Sir Charles Sidley,on west, to Burham Common,on south.
   To grandson Thomas Taylor, 3rd son of James, forever, house called Blew Bell on the hill, with barn, stables, and land of 2 acres, 1 piece of arable adjoining Pottkin Wood, north and Burham Common, south, of 6 acres; and land adjoining two barns of 4 acres; and 1 piece of rough ground called Lady Land of 16 acres adjoining Pottkin Wood, and to the King's Highway, south; and 1 piece adjoining Lady Land, west and to Aylesford Common, east, of 3 acres; and piece called Heathy Field of 6 acres, adjoining land of Sir Richard Head, north and to Aylesford Common, to the east; and 3 pieces called Farneham Crofts, and 1 little orchard, total 4 acres, lying to Sir Richard Head's land, north and to wood called Impton Wood, west, the 4 acres occupied by John Fuller.
   To grandson Robert 4th son of James Taylor, forever, a house, barn stables and 40 acres of land in Scarrburrough Streete in Wouldham and Burham, occupied by John Watts.
   To grandson Augustine Taylor, 5th son of James, forever , 4 houses, gardens, orchards in Aylesford Street, occupied by Edward Goodman, William Winter, John Luck and lately by John Butler.

Henry Turner, died 1866, attempting to save William Fitzroy Keddell, age 2 (see Headstone in Section D)
   The Maidstone Journal reported the double tragedy.
   "AYLESFORD LOSS OF LIFE BY DROWNING. On Thursday last the village was thrown into great gloom in consequence of the sudden death of two of its inhabitants. The second son of W. F. Keddell, Esq., Surgeon, aged two years, was out with its nurse in a hay field adjoining the river, and whilst playing fell into the water.
   A young man named Henry Turner, aged 28, who was working some distance from the spot, perceived the accident and ran to the child's assistance. Turner jumped into the water and not being able to swim, soon sank.
   A boy on the opposite bank, seeing his danger, swam across and succeeded in bringing him to shore, but although every effort was made to restore animation, it was without avail, as life was probably extinct before he was taken out of the water.
   The child was drowned, and the body was not found till nine in the evening. The young man Turner was the sole support of his infirm parents, and his sudden death has left them unprovided for, but we are glad to learn a subscription is being raised on their behalf, and the Rev. W. J. Lawrence will be glad to receive any sum which may be subscribed for them."
   I wonder who the boy was who pulled Turner out? He deserved a medal !
