Henry Brassey, died 1891. "The Good Squire
of Aylesford." Lived at Preston Hall, the 2nd son of Thomas Brassey,
a leading Railway Contractor. Educated at Harrow and University College,
Oxford. J.P. for Kent. Liberal Unionist M. P. for Sandwich 1868 – 1885.
High Sheriff of Kent 1890 – 91. Captain of West Kent (Queen's Own)
Yeomanry Cavalry.
Prize winning Cattle Breeder. He died of pneumonia, following
the influenza epidemic of 1891. His Pall Bearers were some of his oldest
workmen; Guard of Honour from the R. W. K. Y. C. Very large number of
mourners attended funeral, a special train was laid on from Charing
Cross.
The monument is rather disappointing and commonplace, it is a
pity that the Brassys' taste did not match their wealth!
The Times published his will:
"MR. H. A. BRASSEY'S WILL. Probate duty has been paid on
£1,042,611 0s 8d as the net value (thegross being £1, 075,913 15s 7d) of
the personal estate of Mr HENRY ARTHUR BRASSEY, of Preston Hall, Ashford
(sic), Kent, and Bath-house, Piccadilly, who died on the 13th of May last,
aged 51 years, and of whose will, dated the 10th of August, 1883, with a
codicil made the 20th of July 1887, the executors are his brothers, Thomas
first Lord Brassey, of Bulkely, Chester, Mr Albert Brassey, of Heythrop,
Oxford, and Mr Robert Mitchell Campbell, of Glaisnock, Old Cumnock. The
testator bequeaths to his wife during her widow-hood an annuity (including
the income provided for by her marriage settlement) of £8,000 and the use
and enjoyment of the testator's town house and its furniture and of plate
to the value of £1,000. In the event of Mrs Brassey's remarriage her
annuity is to be reduced to £2,000 for the remainder of her life.
Mr. Brassey leaves in trust for each of his daughters
£50,000. He bequeaths to the Bishop's of London's Fund and the Fever
Hospital, Liverpool road, Islington, £1,000 each; to the Great Ormand
Street Hospital for Sick Children, St. George's Hospital, the Royal
Hospital for Incurables, the British Lying-in Hospital, Endell street, the
Lock Hospital, the Royal National Hospital for Consumption, Ventnor, the
Hospital for Consumption, Brompton, and the Infant Orphan Asylum at
Wanstead, £500 each.
To the West Kent General Hospital the testator bequeaths
£1,000 and to the Kent County Ophthalmic Hospital, the Royal Albert
Orphan Asylum, Bagshot, the Academy for the Blind, the Central London
Hospital for Diseases of the Throat and Ear. The Metropolitan Convalescent
Institution , Walton on Thames, and the Orphan Working School, Haverstock
hill, £500 each.
Mr Brassey bequeaths also £500 to the National Refuges for
Homeless and Destitute Children, Great Queen Street to be primarily
applied in aid of maintaining the boys in and upon and in keeping up the
training ships Chichester and Arethusa. He devises the Preston hall estate
to the use of his first son in priority, and all the contents of the hall
to the use of the tenant for life of that estate."

Albert Brook, died 1909. The Kent Messenger reported his
death.
"AN ECCLES LAD DROWNED
A sad bathing fatality, by which an Eccles lad named Albert Brooks, aged
18, lost his life, occurred on Sunday last, in the River Nen, (sic) at
Wisbech (Cambs.), where the deceased had recently gone to fill a
situation. His companions lost sight of him near some timber, and
instituted a search, but the body was not found till some hours later.
At the inquest a verdict of "Accidental Death" was
brought in. The body was brought to Eccles, and will be interred in
Aylesford Churchyard this (Saturday) afternoon. Much sympathy has been
expressed with the family, who are well known in the village"

Her sister late Countess Dowager of Suffolk, left her £1,000
to which she was entitled by their mother's will; she leaves ½ to nephew
Colonel the Hon. John Finch, other ½ to nephew Rev. William Smith.
She leaves bequest of her brother General the Hon. Edward
Smith, as follows, £1,000 bank stock to nephew Colonel the Hon. John
Smith. £200 long annuities to nephew Rev. Heneage Finch.
To Miss Charlotte Cotes daughter of late John Cotes, Esq., of
Woodcote, Salop., and "of my cousin german, his first wife, the Hon.
Miss Lucy Courtenay, a pair of pearl bracelets, and a little locket with
enamel border, the hair in which was her mother's, the hair in the
bracelet clasps, her aunt's.
To the Hon. Miss Mary Courtenay, a pair of gold bracelets
with diamond clasps.

Rev. Heneage Finch of Oakham, Rutland and George Wickham of Maidstone,
Book Seller, sworn.
Wickham states deceased came to his house on 6th August 1846,
with her will for him to witness. She asked for Mr Hills as well. He saw
Mr Hills son , John Hyde Hills standing in his door on the other side of
the High Street, and called him over to be a witness.
Lady Finch then drew a pen over her signature, which was already
on the will. He did not see rest of will, only the part where he
signed. The section in question concerns the amethyst ring and yellow
stone, which seem to have been inserted into the will after the original
draft ?
Rev. Heneage Finch states that he remembers Lady Maria
telling him that she intended to leave these jewels to the nieces, and
that he believes that these bequests were in the will prior to 6th
of August 1846.

Times Obituary:
"We regret to announce the death of Lieutenant Colonel
the Hon. Daniel Greville Finch, which occurred on Wednesday last. Colonel
Finch had been unwell for some time, but it was not until a few days ago
that his complaint took a fatal turn. The immediate cause of death was
blood poisoning.
Colonel Finch was the second son of the fifth Earl of
Aylesford and uncle to the present peer.
He was born in 1827 and entered the army in 1845, He served
all through the Crimean war with the 68th Regiment, where he distinguished
himself on many occasions, being present at the Battles of Alma, Inkerman,
and the siege and fall of Sebastopol.
He received for his services a brevet majority, the medal
with three clasps, the fifth class of the Medjidie, and the Turkish medal.
After the war he left the 68th and joined the 24th Regiment, with which he
served until he retired in 1862"
