Henry Batchelor, Artesian Well Borer, Hale Farm, Luton (1881 Census). Committed suicide by drowning himself in a tank he had built at Darland House. Inquest reported in "Chatham Observer", 1st February 1890 pp5 and 8. He was the father of Richard Batchelor, who was Mayor of Chatham in 1906

Appoints son Ambrose and "respected friend" Henry Morris of Maidstone, Surveyor, executors.
   All household goods and furniture, etc., to wife Harriet, for life. After her death into residue of personal estate.
   All farming implements to son Ambrose and Henry Morris to carry on farming business during his wife's life. They can use personal estate to carry this out. Wife to have profits for life. After her death or earlier if business discontinued, Upon Trust, to be sold, if wife is still living, to be invested in Government Stocks, wife to have interest for life. If she is dead, to be divided between sons, John, James, Joseph and Ambrose and daughters, Harriet, wife of Thomas Pemble, Sophia Caroline and Elizabeth Snelling, equally.
   Son John shall account for £80, without interest, which has been advanced to him, to his siblings, so all have equal shares.
   Will not signed by Snelling, but by Toke Staples, in the presence of Joseph Snelling ?
   Witnesses: William Beale, Solicitor, Maidstone and J.H. Stevens, his Clerk
   Proved 4th December 1851

Joseph Snelling, Junior, died 1854, was a Victualler in Dover in 1841 (Census). Ten years later he was a patient in the Consumption Hospital, Kensington (1851 Census). He died in Mayfair, presumably still in hospital ? (Register)
