St Mary the Virgin Church, Chislet M.I.s with Index of names

All Saints Church, Chislet from the South October 2003

The following M.I.s are from Chislet, Kent: Its Monuments, Vicars and Parish Officers; with a Digest of Ancient Documents now remaining in the Parish Chest. Rev Francis Haslewood, F.S.A., Rector of St Matthews Church, Ipswich. Published 1887.
He states "The Monumental Inscriptions within the Church and Churchyard has since been very carefully transcribed, and afterwards verified by the Author himself." He found numerous differences in the spelling of the name on the gravestone and in the parish register, such as Greentstreet on the gravestone, Greenstead in the register, Ensett on the gravestone, Ensigne in the register to name but a few.
This illustrates the family historians eternal dilemma over the differences in spelling of ones ancestors surnames. There are also omissions of some burials in the parish register. Indeed on M.I. no. 49 he is moved to record the following "
[In Register, 1749, buried Mr BRICE Senr, Farmer March 2d. The Burial of his wife does not appear to be entered, the Books being at this period carelessly kept]."
