From the Chatham Observer
"DEATH OF MR FRANK MISKIN
We regret to have to record the death of Mr Frank Miskin, partner in
the firm of Messrs Tuff and Miskin, contractors, Rochester, Gravesend
and elsewhere, which sad event occurred at his residence, Greenfields,
Wainscott, on Friday.
The deceased was a son of the late Mr Wm. Miskin, of
Beluncle, Hoo, and for many years he resided at Mackay's Court, Stoke,
only removing to to Wainscott in recent years. The death of the deceased
was not altogether unexpected for, some months past he had been known to
be suffering from a very painful malady. In May last year he underwent a
serious operation, and a week before is death a further operation was
deemed necessary, but his life could not be saved, and he passed away on
the day named. Mr Miskin was 48 years of age. He leaves a widow
(daughter of Mr Henry Pye, of St. Mary's Hall) and one daughter to mourn
his loss.
The deceased gentleman had been connected with the firm of
Tuff and Miskin for nearly 20 years, and besides he was a director of
the building firm of Frank Miskin, Ltd., of the barge owning firm of
Samuel West, Ltd., and of the firm of timber merchants, Drake and Co.,
Ltd. He was a keen man of business , and his strict integrity won for
him the respect and esteem of all with whom he became acquainted.
The late Mr Miskin took an interest in public affairs in
the district in which he resided in which he resided. He was for some
years Chairman of the Stoke School Board, becoming a member of the
Education Committee upon these bodies ceasing to exist to exist. He took
a great interest in all kinds of sport, and was a fine shot.
In politics he was a Conservative, and by his death
his party has lost a staunch supporter.
THE FUNERAL
The deep regard in which the late Mr Miskin was held was evidenced
on Wednesday, when his mortal remains were laid to rest in Frindsbury
Churchyard. Hundreds of people assembled from all parts of the district,
the churchyard being almost filled with friends and sympathisers.
The funeral cortège comprised a glass car, bearing the
coffin, and covered with floral tributes, the private carriage of the
deceased containing wreaths, a landau filled with wreaths, and several
private coaches, in which rode the mourners.
A large number of personal friends and employees of the
late Mr Miskin awaited the arrival of the cortège on Frindsbury Hill
and walked in the rear of the procession from that point along the
Avenue to the church...........................
The whole of the Burial Service, with the exception
of the committal portion, was conducted in the church, the officiating
clergy being the Revs. R. Marley (Vicar of Hoo), W. H, Jackson, and H.
T. Young. The service was plain, but the hymns, "Oh God our
help" and "Now the labourer's task is o'er" were sung. As
the coffin was borne from the church to the graveside the organist (Mr
E. W. Dibley) played "The Dead March" from "Saul".
The grave, a new one was bricked and lined with white
chrysanthemums, ivy and smilax. The body was enclosed in a shell and an
oak coffin with brass furniture. The brass plate bore the inscription:
"Frank Miskin: died 11th Nov., 1904; aged 48
years"........................"
There were 150 floral tributes and the mourners in
addition to the family, included Henry Pye, Senior, Henry Pye, Junior,
Charles Tuff, M.P., Doctors, R. R. Brown, J. Holroyd and Cosman, F. F.
Smith, Mayor of Rochester, Thomas Lake Aveling, the Steward of the
Castle Club, Mr Olding, Re, T. J. Cleave Warne, Vicar of Stoke, H. Cobb
and R. Cobb, Frank Drake, S. J. Brice, F. and Spencer Woodhams, H. T.
Williams (Head of Wainscott School), Joseph Pardoe, Schoolmaster, Henry
Smetham, Historian of Strood, Office staff of Tuff and Miskin and
workmen from Stoke and St.Mary's.

JOSEPH PARDOE DIED 1924
From Chatham Observer
"MR. J. PARDOE
We regret to record the death on Sunday of Mr Joseph Pardoe (55)
headmaster of the Wainscott Council School. He was taken ill about three
weeks ago with gastric influenza, and heart trouble developed which
brought about his end.
There is little doubt that Mr Pardoe's condition was
accentuated by the serious illness of his only daughter Molly, who is in
a Chatham nursing home, where she has undergone a series of operations.
Mrs Pardoe had only just returned from visiting her daughter on Sunday
morning, when she found that her husband had suddenly expired.
A native of Woolescote, near Stourbridge, the late Mr
Pardoe entered the teaching profession at an early age, and after
obtaining his certificate at Chester College he served in schools at
Netterend, Hereford, and Lye, Worcestershire. He then obtained an
appointment under the Kent Education Committee at Stoke, where he
remained six years, and 16 years ago, on the death of Mr Roberts, was
transferred to the school at Frindsbury Extra. Under his able leadership
and the zealous manner in which Mrs Pardoe has worked in the infants
department, Wainscott School has become one of the most successful
schools in the county. Nature study and gardening are taught to both
boys and girls, and some wonderfully good results have been obtained.
The allotments in connection with the school are recognised to be in as
good order as any in Kent. Basketwork and woodwork are among other
accomplishments of the scholars of Wainscott School, and the tuition of
all these important subjects Mr Pardoe took a leading part.
He was exceedingly popular both with staff and scholars,
and a friend of many of the parents. His death has cast a gloom over the
whole district.
Mr Pardoe took an active interest in the local branch of
the National Union of Teachers he had filled the office of president,
was a member of the committee, and represented the branch at the Kent
County Association.
In church work, too, he played a prominent part, being
sides-man at Frindsbury, a member of the Church Council, superintendent
of Wainscott Sunday School, and rurial-deaconal treasurer for the Diocesan
Quota Fund. In all these directions his place will be hard to fill.
The funeral took place in Frindsbury Churchyard yesterday
and was largely attended. The Rev. H. F. Shepherd (vicar) officiated,
assisted by the Rev. E. S. Jose (late vicar). The choirboys led the
singing of the hymn "Holy, Holy, Holy" and the Nunc Domittis
was chanted as the body was borne from the church to the graveside.
Floral tributes were sent, amongst others, by the Mayor and Mayoress of
Rochester, the Frindsbury Parochial Church Council, the sides-men of
Frindsbury Church, the Rochester, Chatham and District National Union of
Teachers, chairman and managers of Staff and the little ones of
Wainscott School, the Wainscott Sunday School children, and members of
the Wainscott Institute, Messrs G. Gates and Sons carried out the
funeral arrangements"

The following is a concise version of the long Chatham Observer article
"A BRIDEGROOM DROWNED, THE GIRL'S MOTHER CAUSED TROUBLE"
INQUEST at Guildhall, Rochester. CORONER Mr W. H. Bell, L.L.B.
FOREMAN OF JURY Mr A. Maddox
BODY FOUND at entrance of Thames and Medway Canal
WITNESS: Mr Alfred Blackman, father of deceased. Agricultural labourer of
Frindsbury. His son worked on Mr Baker's farm for 7½ years. He left work in
April, hoping to find work at Wouldham Cement Works. He was due to be married
in a fortnight, if he was successful in getting job.
When he returned to his father's house, he seemed depressed. His
father did not suspect "foul play" in son's death and had no idea
how his son ended up in river. His son was happy at home.
TO FOREMAN'S QUESTION: When his son left home, he had no idea he might commit
suicide.
TO CORONER'S QUESTION: His son was going to Wouldham because his fiancée
lived there; he approved of his son's marriage.
WITNESS: Mr William Heaver of 3 Raven's Knowle, Wouldham, labourer in Mr
Peter's chalk quarry. Blackman was to marry his adopted daughter, Julia
Lambert. They were to live in witnesses house. Blackman left his house the 7th
of April to get medicine for a bad cold from Dr Bell in Rochester. Witness
lent him 5 shillings. Before he left the house he gave his purse (containing
11/6d) to Heaver to look after, he also left his watch and chain. Blackman had
some savings and was going to draw money out to buy Heaver's furniture.
Blackman was a hard worker. Three weeks previously witness heard him threaten
to commit suicide, saying "I am in two minds to do away with
myself", adding that "his girl's mother" had upset him.
TO A JUROR'S QUESTION: He did not think it odd that Blackman had left his
watch
CORONER'S QUESTION: Did girl's mother object to marriage ? Heaver did not want
to answer question but Coroner insisted. Heaver said the girls' mother wanted
to part them.
TO FOREMAN'S QUESTION: Blackman was cheerful on Monday, there was no
indication he would commit suicide.
WITNESS: Dr A.T. F. Brown examined body, there were no signs of violence. Body
had been in water 2 or 3 days, probably drowned.
WITNESS: Mr William Mungeam, assistant lock keeper , who found the body at
5.30 am, between the lock gate and floodgate. He did not think the body was
brought in by tide.
TO JUROR'S QUESTION: He found Blackman's cap in inner lock. Blackman's head
was jammed in girder of flood gates.
WITNESS: Julia Mary Lambert, of Frog Lane, Upnor. She last saw Blackman on
Sunday night at Strood Station; he was going to Halling to cross the river to
Wouldham by the ferry.
They parted on good terms; he told her he had no regular work,
with none in view. She had known him 3 years. He told her he had saved £33
and was going to withdraw £22 to buy Mr Heaver's furniture. Not having work
seemed to prey on his mind. Her mother objected to the marriage, but her
father told her she was old enough to do what she thought proper. She had no
reason to think Blackman would commit suicide but now believed he had done so.
VERDICT: "Found drowned, circumstances unknown"

From Chatham Observer
"MR. H. T. WILLIAMS
A well known resident of Frindsbury passed away on Monday morning in
the person of Mr Henry Thomas Williams, aged 73 years. The deceased, who
resided at Grove House, Grove Road, carried on for many years the
business of a builder, and for 33 years he was rate collector and
assistant overseer of the parishes of Frindsbury Intra and Frindsbury
Extra.
In business he was one of the most successful traders in
the towns, and was able to retire some years since, owning a
considerable amount of property in the neighbourhood. Sometime
afterwards he gave up his parochial work, and, it will be remembered, on
his relinquishing the office, the district was divided, Mr W. J. Baker
being appointed assistant overseer and rate collector for Frindsbury
Intra, and Mr S.W. Ring for Frindsbury Extra.
The deceased was also a staunch Churchman, and for many
years was Churchwarden at Frindsbury Church. For three years he
represented Frindsbury Extra on the Strood Board of Guardians and
District Council, and his knowledge of the parish and it's needs made
him a most useful member, especially on the latter body.
He was a man of strict integrity, and was held in high
esteem by a large circle of friends. Mr Williams had been ailing for a
long time. Bronchitis and asthma ga

"BARGE OVERTURNED
The sudden gales on Wednesday week wrought havoc among the smaller
craft on the Lower Thames. At Greenhithe two barges were overturned, and
William Gurr, of Upnor, one of the crew of the Vectis, was imprisoned in
the cabin.
The wreck was towed ashore, and the lifeless body was
recovered next day. At the inquest on Saturday, Edward Gurr, of Strood,
the captain of the Vectis, stated that the deceased was his father.
Witness endeavoured to drag him out of the cabin companion
as the vessel was heeling over, but he (witness) lost his foothold by
the capsizing of the boat, and was submerged. When he got clear of the
wreck, he saw one of the crew on the upturned keel, and there were no
signs of his father.
At the time the squall struck the vessel, hardly any sail
was set. It was the worst squall witness had known"

"FUNERAL OF THE LATE MR. REUBEN MIDDLETON
The funeral of the late Mr Reuben Middleton, general manager to Messrs
Aveling and Porter, Limited, Strood, whose death we recorded in our last
issue, took place amid many manifestations of regret, on Saturday, the
remains being interred with those of his wife, who died two years ago,
at Frindsbury Churchyard.
The cortège, which consisted of a Washington car,
containing the coffin, of polished oak, with brass fittings, and eight
mourning carriages, left the late residence of the deceased, Bridge
House, Esplanade, Strood, at 2.40 and proceeded by way of the High
street, North street, and Frindsbury road to the place of burial.
Many of the men, who had been employed under the deceased
followed in the rear, while a considerable number assembled at the
church, where Mr T. L. Aveling and Mr H, Pitts (directors of the firm)

WILLIAM HANCOCK DIED 1888
When the Inquest was held, Hancock's name was not known. He was buried
at All Saints as an "unknown man". When his family discovered
that he had been killed, they tried to have his body exhumed and
reburied in Nottingham. This attempt was not successful, so they placed
the small headstone on the grave, and the church register was adjusted
to record the identity of the dead man.
From the Chatham Observer
"SUICIDE AT STROOD
SINGULAR HALLUCINATIONS
An inquest was held on Saturday at the Railway Tavern, before the
City Coroner, Mr W. H. Bell, LL B., on the body of a man unknown who was
killed on the South Eastern Railway, on Thursday night.
Mr D. Skinner was appointed foreman of the jury.
Edward Hansted, of Temple Farm, Strood, foreman of Temple
Brickfields, deposed that he saw the deceased the first time at about
half past three in the afternoon of Thursday. He did not remember the
name of the deceased although it was told to him. He saw him previously
go on to the South Eastern Railway, and when he came to the wharf the
3.37 train from Maidstone passed by. Deceased swung his arm over his
head, and then went and lay down by witness's house. Deceased afterwards
asked for water and witness gave him some. He complained of his head
being bad, and said he suffered with his head. In the course of
conversation deceased gave his Christian name as William, and said that
he was a fitter by trade. He stated also that he had been at work in
Chatham dockyard, and had come that morning from Cage lane, Chatham.
When a train passed along the London, Chatham and Dover
Railway, he exclaimed "That is where I ought to be, under the
train", and repeated this when another one came up later on. He
said, " There are several thousands women coming to kick me to
death", and when witness replied "Oh, no they are not, they
don't kick people to death in this country", he said, "Don't
talk so mad".
Deceased left witness and witness did not see him again
until the train had passed over him. He was then dead.
Thomas William Harris, of Cuxton road, Strood, labourer,
said he saw deceased between three and four o'clock on Thursday
afternoon near Mr Hansted's cottage. He asked witness where there was
any water, and he replied "you are close to the river". Then
he said "I want to drown myself", and on being asked why he
answered, "Because women are after me". He was quiet and spoke
as though more to himself than any one else. Subsequently he went upon
the South Eastern line, and a down train came by. Witness shouted
"Come off the line", and deceased replied, "This is what
I have been waiting for". Witness tried and could not reach him
before deceased threw his hat into the air, and jumped in front of the
train just as it reached him. The wheels of the whole train passed over
him, and when witness went up he found him dead.
George Richards, Maidstone, deposed that he was driving the
engine of the 4.8 train from Charing Cross to Maidstone. He left Strood
station at 5.28 for Cuxton, and when near the Temple brickfields, he saw
a man on the down side clear of the line. When he first saw him he would
be probably thirty yards away, and five or six yards before he reached
him he deliberately "dived" in front of the engine. The wheels
passed over him, and it was quite impossible for him to stop in time,
although he shut off steam and applied the brake.
Henry Coulter, Inspector for the South Eastern Railway Company, of Bowes
road, Strood, stated that he received information of the death of the
deceased, so he went with a stretcher and conveyed him to the Railway
Tavern.
A verdict of "Suicide whilst in a state of unsound mind" was
returned.

WILLIAM HENRY WILSON DIED 1889
From Chatham Observer
"CRUSHED TO DEATH BY MACHINERY
W.J. Harris, County Coroner, held an inquest at the Cottage on the
Cliff Inn, Frindsbury, on Friday week, on the body of a man named
William Henry Wilson, who was killed on the previous day by being
crushed in the cogwheels of a machine at the Frindsbury Cement Works.
The deceased apparently slipped when passing the wheel, and
thoughtlessly put his hand into the cogs, and was drawn in and
frightfully crushed.
Louisa Wilson, wife of Reuben Wilson, said deceased was her
son and was twenty years of age. He was employed at Frindsbury Cement
Works.
Stephan Wellar, of Rochester, Wet (sic) ? Maker, in the
employ of Messrs Tingey and Son, Frindsbury Cement Works, said the
deceased was employed as witness's assistant, and had been working with
him about three months. Deceased had been employed on the works for some
years.
On the previous day, at 11.45, deceased went down into the
engine room in answer to a signal to start the pumps. As deceased did
not return, witness looked down and saw him hanging by the right arm
from the cogs of a wheel. Deceased's arm and part of his body was
crushed in the cogs. Witness stopped the engine immediately, and got the
deceased out. Deceased had been killed instantly, the shaft of the
engine rotating at the rate of eighty revolutions to the minute. In his
opinion the deceased met his death by slipping on the floor and putting
his hand thoughtlessly into the cogs. The cogwheel was between five and
six feet from the floor. Deceased was not employed in oiling.
He was wearing a sleeved waistcoat.
George Batchelor, Foreman of the Cement Works, said he
arrived on the spot within three minutes of the accident. He saw that
deceased was dead, his arm being held in the cogs right close to the
body, and completely crushed. Witness was of opinion the deceased
slipped on the floor, and to save himself put his hand on the cogs
without thinking of the consequences.
The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental
death".
To modern readers it is rather shocking that the machine had no guard
fitted and that the floor was slippery. The tone of the report seems to
blame poor Wilson for an understandable instinctive act.

ALBERT EDWARD STRUDWICK DIED 1899 [119]
Concise version of a long Chatham Observer article
"KILLED AT STROOD STATION
SHOCKING ACCIDENT TO A RAILWAY PORTER
INQUEST: At St. Bartholomew's Hospital
CORONER: R. J. M. Steadman
CAUSE OF DEATH: Crushed between platform and train
FOREMAN OF JURY: E. H. Wraith
Mr G. Pile, Station Master observed Inquest for S.E.R.
WITNESS: John Huggett, Coachman of Epsom, brother in law of deceased.
Identified body
WITNESS: John Thomas Wright, Seaman of H.M.S. PEMBROKE. Knew deceased for 12
years. Saw him Sunday night at Porters Room at Strood Station. Deceased then
crossed the line as train was reversing into station, deceased tried to jump
clear but train caught him. Witness ran for help from station staff.
TO CORONER'S QUESTION: Deceased did not say he was going to cross line. He was
not in a hurry; he was cheerful and sober.
TO JUROR'S QUESTION: It was a clear night. The train was being moved from the
Maidstone line to the main line. If deceased had got into the 6 foot way
(between lines) he would be safe. The train was moving very quietly. Did not
think deceased saw train; there was no whistle or light at rear.
WITNESS: Thomas Pearce, Ticket Collector. Deceased's duty was involved with
mails; witness spoke to him as he crossed line. Witness shouted "Look
out, there". Deceased made a leap for the platform. There was no light at
rear of train but a guard was showing a hand lamp. He heard a whistle before
shunt started.
TO JUROR'S QUESTION: Could not hear train but saw it. The station lights were
fully on.
TO CORONER'S QUESTION: Deceased would be off duty at 10; train moved a "a
man's running pace".
WITNESS: Charles Gilbert, Assistant Guard. He was in guard's brake of train;
he held a lamp out of the window but took it in before platform was reached.
He heard shout "Whoa", then saw deceased between platform and train.
He applied the brake and train stopped within 2 yards; told driver not to
move. Part of the platform had to be cut out to free deceased. He was taken to
hospital, unconscious, bleeding from the head and stomach. The whistle was
blown before platform was reached.
QUESTION FROM MR PILE: Auto vacuum brake was attached.
WITNESS: George Bunyard, Engine Driver. Was in charge of train; saw deceased
two minutes before accident. Did not see accident. Blew whistle before
shunting. When he felt brake he stopped train "instantly". He
assisted in placing deceased on to stretcher.
WITNESS: Henry John Mills, Carriage Cleaner. Deceased was dismissed from S.E.R.
About 3½ years ago and was out of work 10–12 days. Witness asked deceased
if Mr Pile would take him on again. Deceased said he believed he would but if
he did not re-employ him again he said, " I shall rub myself out".
Witness believed he meant suicide. Deceased seemed depressed then but
thereafyre he seemed fine.
JUROR'S PROTEST: Juror, Mr Gazeley, protested over last witness's evidence, he
did not consider it was relevant. The Coroner told Gazeley he must allow
Coroner to do his job.
WITNESS: Arthur John Groombridge, S.E.R. Inspector, said that some of the
Strood staff told him 8 or 9 months ago that deceased had threatened suicide.
JUROR'S QUESTION: Was it usual to shunt with no light ?
WITNESS: Company regulations required a rear light and it was duty of deceased
to place one. He should have a lamp ready.
TO JUROR'S QUESTION: Deceased looked after mails, he had no business to leave
up platform.
TO JOHN HUGGETT'S QUESTION: Deceased had been on duty since 8.30 am, but had
gaps between trains and a good time for meals. Sunday was an "easy day's
work". Deceased had 2½ hours for dinner at midday.
DOCTOR'S TESTIMONY: Mr Ludford Cooper, House Surgeon at St. Bartholomew's
Hospital.
Deceased admitted at 10.45 on Sunday night, he was unconscious and died ¾ of
an hour later.
He died of shock, secondary to probable ruptured viscera.
WITNESS: Police Sergeant Beckwith. Evidence not recorded.
Verdict "Accidental Death" (Strudwick was recently married)"

"LOSS OF BARGE IN THE RIVER
TWO ROCHESTER MEN DROWNED
Hardly has the new year been ushered in before we have to chronicle
one of the saddest fatalities which has occurred on the river on the
river for many months past.
Readers will remember the severe squall which swept
over the district about eleven o'clock on Wednesday morning, when the
sky was almost as dark as ink, and the wind came in very fierce gusts.
The forces of the squall was felt to it's fullest extent in the river,
and it resulted in the capsizing of the barge Anglo Dane, and the loss
of the captain and mate.
The craft, which belonged to Mr G. H. Curel, of
Rochester, was loaded with coke, and was proceeding down the river at
the time. Everything went well until she was in Sea Reach, and then the
vessel was caught in the squall. What really happened will probably
never be known, as neither the captain Mr B. (sic)* Wadhams, nor the
mate, Mr. C. Pocock lived to tell the tale.
The only particulars which can be ascertained are those
afforded by the crew of the barge Wimbrel which was also in Sea Reach at
the same time, but some distance away from the ill – fated Anglo Dane.
From the statement of the captain of the Wimbrel it seems that he saw
the Anglo Dane just as the squall bore down upon them, and almost
immediately afterwards he noticed that the barge had been capsized. He
was, however, powerless the render the least assistance, because of the
danger to which his own vessel was exposed. It was extremely dark at the
time, but he fancied that he caught sight of one of the crew clinging to
the side of the capsized craft. The feelings of those on board the
Wimbrel well may be imagined, when they knew that fellow bargemen were
probably perishing in the treacherous waters, and they unable to render
the least assistance towards saving them. The end of the two unfortunate
men can only be conjectured. Even if both managed to hold on to the
barge, it is probable that the extreme coldness of the water, quickly
brought on a sense of numbness, and the waves then swept them away from
the vessel, before the waters finally closed over their heads.
When the sad intelligence reached Rochester and Chatham it
at once drew forth many expressions of sympathy from those engaged in
the river traffic. The late captain of the Anglo Dane leaves, we
understand, a widow and four children. The barge which ultimately
sank,has since been discovered"
*Wadhams name was Thomas, he is buried in Strood Cemetery, under a very
eroded headstone, on which his fate can still be made out.

From Chatham Observer
"SUDDEN DEATH OF AN UPNOR MAN
On Thursday, the 10th inst., a man named George Briggs, landlord of the
King's Head Beer house, Upnor, who had not been enjoying good health, went
down the river on board Mr G. H. Curel's barge, The Brothers, of Rochester, in
company with Capt. Smeed and his mate.
While off Port Victoria, Smeed and his mate went to bed about 9
pm, leaving Briggs up to call them for the purpose of proceeding early on the
journey to London.
The mate awoke about 2.45 on Friday morning, and heard Briggs
breathing very hard. Thinking something was amiss with him, he called Smeed,
and they came to the conclusion that Briggs had fainted through the cabin
being too hot. They pulled his boots off, and were about to put him in his
bunk when he exclaimed "Oh ! Bill, I am going to die" , and he
expired almost immediately.
Dr Langston, who had been attending deceased for some time for
heart disease, did not think an inquiry necessary, as the cause of death was
apparent"
CHARLES FOX, DIED 1893,
Concise version of a long Chatham Observer article
"SUICIDE OF STROOD MAN
APOLOGY TO CORONER AND JURY
INQUEST: St. Bartholomew's Hospital, Rochester
CORONER: Mr W. H. Bell
FOREMAN OF JURY: Mr F. Broomfield
Fox had died the previous Friday from pneumonia accelerated by laudanum .
WITNESS: Dora Briggs, step-daughter of Fox, of 2 Tobin Villas, Cuxton Road,
Strood.
Fox was a retired Royal Marines Sergeant, with no fixed occupation, living on
property and occasional work. He was 42 years old.
His wife had died in 1891. He was depressed at times, she thought
caused by lack of regular work. He was happy at home with witness and her
sister. He was of temperate habits. He went to bed about midnight on Tuesday;
he had a bad cold. At 12.30 pm next day he was still in his room, she went to
check how he was. It was not unusual for him to remain a long time in bed. He
seemed to be asleep and was breathing heavily. At 2 o'clock she returned to
his room, when she noticed a glass and empty bottle of laudanum. A full bottle
of laudanum was in his box. The bottles came from different chemists in
Gravesend. He was still asleep and could not be wakened. She and her sister
went for Mr C. D . Levy, for help, he was away, so Mr Ogle went to the house
and sent for Dr Packman. Fox had never threatened suicide, witness had no
reason to believe he would do so.
LETTER ADDRESSED TO "CORONER, CITY OF ROCHESTER", found in Fox's
box, stated he had taken 2 ounces of laudanum, he apologised for trouble he
had caused. Another letter addressed to Mr Bassett, contained instructions for
funeral and disposal of his property.
TO JUROR'S QUESTION: Witness did not know if Fox had had sun-stroke or fall
whilst in the military. Juror stated that Fox had told him he had had
sun-stroke.
WITNESS: William Ogle of Grove Road, Frindsbury, manager to Mr. Levy. He knew
Fox, having done business for him. Last saw him Tuesday night at Conservative
Club, they both had drink. Fox was sober but seemed depressed, saying he did
not feel up to much. He had been worried about money and lack of work. He was
well educated.
On Wednesday morning he went to Fox's house, Fox was foaming at
the mouth and breathing heavily. Fox had vomited and his sheets were soaked.
There was a strong smell of laudanum. Witness went for Dr Packman, when he
arrived, they walked Fox around the room for 3 hours. Fox was then moved to
the hospital.
TO JUROR'S QUESTION: Letter was in Fox's hand.
WITNESS: Ludford Cooper, surgeon at the hospital. The day after Fox was
admitted pneumonia set in and Fox died that (Friday) evening.
VERDICT: "Suicide during temporary insanity"

Concise version of a long Chatham Observer article
" A LAD KILLED BY MACHINERY
INQUEST: St. Bartholomew's Hospital, Rochester
CORONER: Mr W. H. Bell
FOREMAN OF JURY: Mr Wyles
FACTORY INSPECTOR: Mr J. A. Redgrave
COMPANY SOLICITOR: Mr R. Arnold
Deceased fatally injured by being caught in machinery (not specified) at
Aveling and Porter's Works, Strood.
WITNESS: Father of deceased, Thomas Davis, of Strood, Engine Driver on
S.E.Railway.
His son had been employed at firm five or six months. His son had told
him he went into the machine to oil and clean the middle spindle.
Witness asked him if anyone had sent him there, his son replied
"No".
He also said his foot had slipped and he was caught
by the machine.
WITNESS: Stephen William Franks of Rochester, Blacksmith at the works.
Deceased was under him. It was not part of deceased's job to go into the
machine. Witness had never seen him in there. He saw deceased entangled
in the machine about half past twelve, he did not see him go in.
Deceased's right leg was trapped between the wheel and the frame.
Witness stopped the machine. The guard was taken off to enable deceased
to be released. Mr J. C. Boon stopped the bleeding from deceased's leg,
and Dr Cowan was sent for.
TO QUESTION FROM JURY FOREMAN: The machine was not stopped during
cleaning operations.
TO QUESTION FROM MR REDGRAVE: The machine was not used that morning. It
was usually cleaned between 12 and 1 o'clock on Saturday. The two pinion
wheels were fenced in on the outside but not inside. Witness thought
guards should be fixed on the inside, if they had , the accident would
not have happened.
WITNESS: Ernest Hurst of Rochester, Striker at the works..
He saw deceased standing on the machine wiping down the
casing of the wheel. He heard a shout and saw that deceased was in the
machine.
TO MR ARNOLD'S QUESTION: Witness saved deceased's arm from being caught
and tied his leg with his neck tie.
WITNESS: George Smith of Rochester, Foreman of Smiths at the works.
Deceased had no business on the top of the machine. Witness
believed machine was adequately protected. He had warned deceased not to
go on to the machine when it was in motion. There was no reason why
protection should be on the inside of the wheel.
QUESTION FROM MR REDGRAVE: "If anyone was in the machine while in
motion, you would call it a death trap, would you not ?" Witness
replied "Yes".
MEDICAL EVIDENCE: Mr L. Cooper, House Surgeon at the hospital.
The bone of deceased's leg was broken and splintered. The leg was
greatly mangled and was amputated. Deceased did well for five days, but
on Friday lock – jaw (tetanus) set in and deceased died on Saturday.
CORONER'S OPINION: The accident appeared to be entirely from the
deceased's own fault.
VERDICT: "Death from Misadventure". The Jury believed the
machine should be better guarded and stopped for cleaning. Mr Arnold
said he would make this representation to Messrs Aveling and
Porter."

From Chatham News
"STROOD MAN DROWNED
The funeral took place at Frindsbury on Wednesday of Mr Arthur James
Butlin (39). of 100 Frindsbury road, Master and part proprietor of the
sailing barge Centaur. He accidentally met his death at St. Valery on
Caux, France, on July 21st , and it appears that he must have fallen off
a ladder from his barge to the quay, for in the water below he was found
drowned.
Funeral rites were accorded in France, but the body was
brought to England in his own barge, navigated by Mr Pudney, also a
share holder in the Centaur.
In addition to the deceased's widow and mother and other
relatives, there was a large attendance at the funeral, including Free
Masons, Druids and Foresters, all of which he was a brother, and members
of the Barge mens' Mutual Aid Society, the latter with their banner.
In the absence of the Vicar, the funeral service was read
by the Vicar of St. Mary's, Strood, (the Rev. L. D. Hammond). There was
a large collection of wreaths, including, in addition to family
tributes, one from the Gillingham League of Freemasons, of which, Mr
Butlin had long been a member."

"FIFTY YEARS A JUROR
DEATH OF MR. J. T. J. HILL
We regret to record the death of Mr John Thomas Jennings Hill (85)
of 49, Grove Road, Strood, which sad event occurred at a nursing home in
Chatham in the early hours of Monday morning.
A native of Strood, the deceased was born in a house on old
Rochester Bridge and for that reason he was always known as the Kentish
Man nearest the Men of Kent.
Prior to his retirement about 35 years ago he followed the
avocation of a fisherman, and as such had many thrilling experiences. On
one of his last voyages he was swept overboard by a heavy sea, and was
rescued by one of his sons. He was a member of the jury of the Rochester
Oyster Fishery for 51 years, and was for 26 years the Chamberlain.
The Admiralty Court on Saturday was the first he had failed
to attend for over half a century. Little, however, was it thought that
he was so near his end.
Mr Hill was a staunch Liberal and a prominent member of the
Strood Workmens' Club. He was a keen billiard player, and only a few
months ago won the billiards cup in a competition at the club.
He leaves seven sons and one daughter (Mrs Hollins), his
wife having pre-deceased him some ten years.
The interment takes place in Frindsbury Churchyard on
Saturday at 2.15 pm."

"Why all the fuss?"
"Asks Mr Landers on his 100th birthday
"What's all the fuss about ?" Mr William Landers asked
good humouredly when the Mayor of Rochester (Alderman A. C. Lyle) paid a
special visit to him at his home, 144 Weston Road, Strood, on Friday. Mr
Landers was 100 years old on that day.
The Mayor then read a telegram from the King sent from
Balmoral Castle, Scotland. It stated; "The King and Queen are much
interested to hear that you are celebrating your 100th birthday and send
you hearty congratulations and good wishes – Private Secretary."
Among the many other congratulatory messages was a telegram
from the Mayor of Rochester himself.
BIRTHDAY GIFTS
After he had shaken hands with Mr Landers, the Mayor presented him
with a box of cigarettes, tobacco, some cheroots ---- and some liquid
refreshments"

APPENDIX
375. Colonel George Baker, C. B.
I remember walking into the burial ground about 30 years
ago, and noticing a headstone to a military man, (whose name I could not
remember), but I remember the C. B. because Companions of the Bath are
rather thin on the ground in the Medway Towns.
This must have been Colonel Baker, and if his headstone is
still here it could be one of those fallen face down. I did try to raise
these stones sufficiently to read them, but lacking a suitable lever, I
was unable to do so. So, I have included the short Times obituary
published on the day of his burial, October 22nd 1910. I assume that
Colonel Baker was related to the Baker family who farmed Manor Farm, his
abode at the time of his death.
"COL. GEORGE BAKER
The death has taken place at Frindsbury, Rochester, of
Colonel George Baker, C.B., at the age of 70. Colonel Baker was with the
67th (South Hampshire Regiment) throughout the campaign of 1860 in
China, and carried the regimental colour at the action in Sinho, at the
taking of Tangku, and with the storming party of the Taku Fort, the
ditch of which he crossed and planted the colours on the cavalier.
He was also present at the surrender of Peking, and
received the China medal and two clasps. He was again with the 67th
throughout the Afghan campaign of 1878–80, and was present in the
engagement at Charasiah on October 6th 1879, and in the operations round
Kabul in December, 1879, including the investment of Sherpore. He was
mentioned in despatches, and received the medal and two clasps.
Five years later, in 1885–6, he led the 67th as its
commanding officer, in the Burmese Expeditions until after the surrender
of Mandalay, and was again mentioned in despatches, made a Companion of
the Bath, and granted the medal with clasp.
Colonel Baker afterwards returned with his regiment to
Chatham, where he was stationed until given a district in Ireland.
The funeral takes place today at Frindsbury"
