Some Kentish Gravestones & other notes

Gravesend with Index of names and places at end

Back to Kentish Gravestones & other notes introduction

Kindly typed up for the website by Pat Tritton

T.C. Colyer-Fergusson was a contemporary of Leland L. Duncan, both served on the Council of the K.A.S. together. He recorded the M.I.s of St George's Church, Gravesend and wrote them up in longhand in a white skinned book of some 123 pages, which is now in the C.K.S., Maidstone. We are indebted to Stuart Bligh, County Archivist for permission to copy the M.I. listings. Colyer-Fergusson divided the listings, starting the numbering afresh in each section. The whole listing has been re-numbered for indexing purposes. He also took quite a number of pictures of gravestones which he pasted into the book. The graveyard was mostly cleared of stones in the 1960's. Some were placed along the Western edge of the graveyard. Pictures

245. Newspaper report, un-dated, tucked in Volume: A Veteran Figure - Death of the Rev. J. Denny GEDGE
We announce with regret the death of the Rev. John Denny Gedge, who passed away about mid-day on Wednesday, at the Rectory, Pelham-Road, Gravesend, at the advanced age of 83, being within a month of his 84th birthday. The rev. gentleman was held in high regard by all classes of the community, and his death is a loss to the social and religious life of the district.
The illness was of short duration. He assisted in the church service at St. George’s on Sunday, October 31st, and took the Litany on Wednesday, November 3rd. Later he was confined to the house, but his condition was not deemed very serious, and during his last few days it was hoped that he would soon be restored to health. A relapse occurred this week, however, and he passed away somewhat unexpectedly.
The Rev. gentleman, who took his degree at Oxford, was for thirty years vicar of Methwold in Norfolk, and later rector of Coston in Leicestershire. He resigned the rectorate eleven years ago, and came to Gravesend, with his wife, to live with his son, the Rev. Canon E.L. Gedge. During that period he assisted the Canon in the work of St. George’s Church, and in many ways rendered valuable service in the religious movements of the parish. His wife predeceased him seven years ago.
A great reader and classical scholar, he was a man of very keen intelligence, and took a great interest in social topics and the problems of the day. He had scientific tastes, was an artist and literary man, and had a polished style as a writer of verse. His name was familiar in the daily press, and he was a welcome contributor to this paper. He often travelled and as recently as 1914 paid a visit to the Continent.
The funeral takes place on Tuesday at Methwold, (North West of Thetford, Norfolk) his wife having been laid to rest in that churchyard.

246. Additional information about, carbon copy of typed text:- Finding the Grave of a Princess 31st May ?1914?
Exhumation in church at Gravesend.
At 6 o’clock yesterday morning the grave in St. George’s Church, Gravesend, in which the remains of the famous Princess Pocahontas are said to lie, was opened, under a Home Office order.
Princess Pocahontas was the daughter of a Red Indian Chief, POCAHATTAN, who ruled a territory which includes the present site of New York. She saved the life of a young Virginian named John ROLFE, and the companion of the famous Captain John SMITH, who later married her and brought her to England. On her death soon after her arrival at Gravesend in 1618 she was buried in the crypt of the Gravesend parish church.
