John Cradock, of Chatham, Yeoman, P.C.C. Will
dated 13th February 1745/6
To nephew Edward Clifferton £10; to Thomas Cradock (2 years old) son of
his nephew Thomas late of Eastchurch, deceased, £30 at 21; to Elizabeth
Dudley daughter of William Dudley of Sheerness, Joiner and Elizabeth his
wife, who is testator's niece, £10 at 24. To nephews and nieces, James,
Mary, William, Jeffery and Elizabeth Crips, £10 each at 24.
To sister Ann Raysell wife of John Raysell of Higham,
Yeoman,, £20. To sister Elizabeth Hogben, widow, a £10 annuity, for
life, from personal estate. To John Raysell and his wife Ann, Elizabeth
Hogben. Ann Stephens of Higham, Spinster and his servant maid, Mary
Parker, if she is with him at death, 5 guineas each for mourning.
To John Raysell and William Tadman of Higham, Yeoman, £20
each for their trouble as his executors. He releases Raysell from debts
owed and that a bond for security be given to him to cancel. To Mary
Parker, money extra to her wages due to make up £100; she is to have free
use of any one room in his house called Oakley at Higham, and the
furniture she shall choose. To William Cradock (about 8 or 9 years old)
£1,000 at 21; he has been brought up by testator and is now at Mr
Morris's Boarding School in Castle Street, Southwark; he is to have £20
per annum towards his education. Overseers of the will to assist executors
in William's education. When William leaves school he wishes him to enter
farming and grazing business, assisted by Raysell and Tadman.
Residue of estate to John Cradock, at 21, (he is aged about
15); he was also brought up by testator and is also at Morris's school. He
would like John to enter the farming business and is to be educated under
care of Raysell and Tadman for not more than £30 per annum. If both the
latter legatees die pre 21, then residue to those of his sisters and
nephews and their heirs, then living, including Ann Bradley, equally
shared. In this case the annuity to Elizabeth Hogben will cease.
John Raysell, William Tadman and John Cradock are executors;
William Twopenny of Rochester, Gentleman is Overseer; he wishes him to
assist Raysell and Tadman to carry on farming business. William Cradock is
to have part of the farms and business at 21; he is also to have, if John
Cradock lives, the leases on his 2 farms, Oakley and Abbey Farm, both in
Higham; the room left to Mary Parker, excepted. John Raysell is to
continue to occupy Abbey Farm

ALSO MARY WIFE OF JAMES STAINES
AND LATE WIFE OF THE ABOVE H.EDMEADES
WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE [FEBRUARY [ ] ]

[Eroded Verses]
This Inscription is puzzling. The headstone is of a type and thickness which
fits the 1730s,
the Portland stone body stone is of a later date. The style of the lettering
seems later than the
period of the headstone, and the dates of the first part of the inscription is
completely wrong! There is no Edmeades in the Parish Burial Register for 1775.
To make any sense, it should read as follows:
MR. HENRY EDMEADES OF THIS PARISH
WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE FEBRUARY [ ]
1730 AGED [ ]
Henry Edmeades, the Elder, of Higham, Yeoman, Archdeaconry Court of
Rochester Will dated 22nd January 1730/31
(This will was originally drawn up in 1727 with alterations made on
the above date)
To wife Mary, £200; to eldest son, Henry, £300 at 21 or marriage,
if he dies before then, the £300 to the two younger children, Mary and Amy (Amy
in place of William, which is crossed out). Also to Mary and Amy, £200 each, as
above; if they both died before 21 or marriage, then the whole £400 to Henry.
Rest and residue, except leases of farms he now uses, to wife and
children equally shared. The leases of his lands, to wife and son Henry, which
they should use in partnership. If wife remarries, she shall "quit the
possession of the said farms and lands". In such a case the leases to son
Henry.
Wife and son Henry to share maintenance and education of younger
children until they are 21 or married. If wife remarries she shall, within a
month of that marriage, pay the legacies of his three children, to his brother
Robert Edmeades of Nurstead, Yeoman and George Masters of Meopham, Gentleman, in
trust for the children; (the latter trustee is in place of Henry Masters of
Higham, which has been crossed out). Trustees will be guardians of children
during minorities. Wife and son Henry, executors; if wife remarries, Henry is
sole executor.
Witnesses: (after above alterations were made), Richard Prickett
and John Sheafe
Proved 29th March 1731
This is the Henry Edmeades whose headstone does not make sense. It bears the
date for Henry of 1775 not 1730 ?
The rest of the inscription makes perfect sense, all his children
are name, as in the above will; Mary Edmeades, widow of Henry, married James
Staines at Higham in 1736 and died in 1750. Was the stone re-cut at a later
date, when the mistake was made? It is hard to believe that February was re-cut,
by mistake as September. There are no Edmeades burials recorded in the Registers
for 1775, so the mystery remains!

"God graunte that thou who yet dost draw thy breath,

Thinck still on death thou ne'r wilt doe amisse"
Ann Cordewell's husband, Samuel Cordewell of Higham,
Esquire, left a P.C.C. Will dated 7th December 1647
Although he desire to be buried in the chancel of Higham church, and
provides £100 for his funeral, there appears that there was never a
monument for him, in contrast to his wife. He holds by lease from the
Crown, a farm at Higham, occupied by Francis Wakeland, this is left to his
son Luke. He has purchased the Manor of Combe, in St. Mary Hoo and
Allhallows, this property, after some legal complications, also goes to
Luke. If Luke dies before the properties are conveyed to him, then the
testator's brother Robert Cordewell, Gentleman, of London and Nathaniel
Sikes, Citizen and Fish Monger of London, are to convey the properties to
testator's daughters Anne May and Sarah Cordewell. Much of the will
involves a marriage settlement with his wife Sarah; this required him to
lay out £2,000 to purchase good quality land within a year of the
marriage. He has not done this yet, so his executors will make the
purchase and to settle it on Sarah. Another substantial part of the will
is taken up with marriage settlements for when his daughters marry.
He has a 40 year contract from the Crown to keep the lions
and leopards in the Tower Of London, this contract goes to son Luke, if
Luke dies pre 21, it goes to testator's brother Robert. He has usually
given to the poor of Higham, 20s for every acre he has planted; he has
planted 10 acres, called "Winters", so executors to pay £10 to
use of the poor.
He has also been giving 2s per week in bread to the poor,
this is to cease, unless his son carries it on.
His wife gets all the contents of his house at Lambeth, except two
hangings (tapestries?), of the story of "Sampson and
Philistines" in the "matted" room and others in his bed
chamber. His wife also has his favourite diamond ring and biggest necklace
of pearls; she also has the £50 debt owed by Mistress March, upon bond.
His house at Lambeth Marsh, leased to 1649, goes to his wife. Brother
Robert is to have his shares in two ships named the "Hopeful
Luke" and the "Valentine". To his sister Mary Cordewell,
wife of Robert, £5 for a ring; to kinswoman, Constance Riccolls ?,
"now beyond the seas", £100; to friend Mistress Whitteny ?,
late wife of Mr Collins, now wife of Mr Whitteny, £100; to Mistress
Sibell Lyne, £10; to Francis Cordewell and his wife £5 each to buy
rings; to John Collins, who lives with brother Robert Cordewell, £20 to
put him in a "good calling". He has a necklace of pearls and a
----- ? diamond ring enamelled with blue, which he had before his present
marriage, and another diamond ring with several stones, which he wears,
also two similar rings; these to his daughters Anne and Mary; they also
get residue of personal estate and leases at 16 years or day of marriage.
To servants with him at his death, 40s each.

Court of Rochester Will dated 27th December 1777
Desires to be buried in churchyard (sic) of Higham, as near to his father
as possible ?
He leaves the Parsonage of Higham, which he leases from St.
John's College, Cambridge, to wife Ann for life; she is to keep in good
repair and not rent out, if she does not want to occupy it, other than to
nephew, William Dilley of Erith, Labourer, or in event of latter's death,
to nephew, Thomas Dilley, late of Erith, Tallow Chandler. After wife's
death, Parsonage to nephew William Dilley, during life of Mary, wife of
John Millen of Darenth, Victualler; and until youngest child of late
brother William and sister Elizabeth Sunner ?, are 21. This property is
bequeathed subject to an annuity of £20 to Mary Millen for life. After
Mary Millen's death and when youngest child of brother and sister are 21,
then lease on the Parsonage to be sold by auction. From the proceeds, to
Samuel Millen of Bromley, Peruke Maker and to Sarah Munn wife of William
Munn of Darenth, Yeoman, £25 each.
Residue of monies equally divided among children of his late
brother and sister. Thomas Stevens , Brewer of Rochester is obliged to him
by bond, dated 1st July 1774, in the sum of £600, half of this with
interest, is due on a certain date, goesto nephew Stephen Sunner at 21
years, this not to be paid during minority. He relies on the credit and
honesty of Thomas Stevens (Mayor of Rochester and builder of Gads Hill
Place), to pay the £300 when due. In the meantime the interest to wife
Ann; if Stephen Sunner dies pre 21, Ann also gets the £300.
To nephews William Dilley and John Sunner, £5 each. All his
freeholds, residue of leaseholds and personal estate, money and household

The first part of the will is taken up by the matter of a marriage

BLAKE
AND JEMIMA HIS WIFE AND THEIR CHILDREN ROSINA, HELEN
There is a text accompanying it, but the actual
inscription is missing. I think it would be appropriate to add it.
"To the Glory of God and in loving memory of Thomas
William Whitebread and Jemima his wife and their children Rosina Jemima,
Alfred George, James Edward, Ellen Ruth and her husband Frank Blake, also
niece and god-child Rosina Helen. erected 1935"
The current text gives the impression that the window was
erected for Ellen Ruth Blake and her husband Frank, even though it is
largely for the Whitebread family. The window was commissioned by Ellen
Ruth Blake, even though she is included in the inscription. Interestingly,
the original version of the window did not include the name 'Whitebread'
(it read 'in loving memory of Thomas William and Jemima his wife'). This
was corrected, possibly while being erected, which is why the framing
passes through the names 'William' and 'Jemima', whereas in the original
design the framing did not bisect any of the words.
Also interesting is the fact that Ellen Ruth's eldest brother
Thomas William Whitebread (d.1896 and the father of Rosina Helen) was not
included on the inscription. We assume this was because there was some
sort of 'falling-out' between the two families, possibly over the
upbringing of Rosina Helen, but I don't think anyone knows for certain. Contributed
