PRAY FOR THE SOUL OF JOHN BEDYLL THE WYCH DESECID THE VII DAY OF JUN
IN THE YERE OF OUR LORD MCCCCC ON WHOSE SOUL GODE HAYFE MERCY AMEN

John Bedyll, the Elder, seems to be a Yeoman Farmer. His Will is dated 3rd March 1498.
   "Sick in Body", he wishes to be buried in the church, "in the aisle before the Crucifix next to the stone of Richard Charlys". "For breaking the ground, 6s 8d". To the Altar Lights "for my tithings negligently forgotten, 6s 8d"; to the Cross Light, 10d; to the Trinity Light, 12d; to our Lady Light, 12d; to St. Nicholas Light, 4d; to St. Warburgh Light, 12d. To "an honest priest to sing for my soul, my wife's soul, my fader's soul and my moder's soul and other christyn souls, 33s 3d" . To each of his God children living, 4d. For the poor 20s distributed in bread at Lent. A stone to be laid on his grave.
   Land in Wellingcroft, 10 acres in Brakefield, Lidwell Hamm Marsh to be sold to pay debts and his bequests. To son, Stephen Bedyll property in St. Mary's, which he can sell at discretion of Executors. To son John Bedyll, house that he lives in, "on the same side that John Joye dwelleth", forever, he keeping it in good repair, also 7 acres of land at . . . . ?
   To daughter Alice Bedyll at 20 years of age, at discretion of Executors To Margaret Bedyll daughter of son John, at 20 years of age, 26s 8d.
   William Halman and John Palmer, son of Giles Palmer, to have house for three lives in Upstreet, with lands and marshes. They to ensure yearly Obit (for his soul) is performed in Church with dirges and mass. Three bushels of wheat and ?bushel of malt to be made into bread and ale for the said dirge. If there are no heirs to above, property to be sold and 8 score sheep to be delivered to Church.
   Churchwardens to arrange yearly Obit in time of Lent with mass and dirge, said or sung. Quarter of wheat and quart of malt to be made into bread and ale distributed in the church. Property in Allhallows to be sold for best price. From this William Halman to have 5 marks, Giles Palmer, 5 marks; remainder paid to Executors. House in Pylstreet sold , money to Executors to be disposed of for "the health of his soul". Executors to lay 150 halles ? of gravel in Upstreet, where most needed.
   Wife Joan to have all movables beholding to her, to sell ?, to the value of 20 marks.

Rev. Richard Jordan of Rochester. Will dated 17th March 1830.
   To daughter Margaret Carter, widow of Rev. Wilfred Carter, D.D., late of Mountfield, Sussex, sole Executor.
   His Wife to have furniture and plate, except large silver bowl, with inscription, stating that it was given to his late brother, Charles Jordan, when a Midshipman in the Royal Navy, in testament of his gallant conduct on 14th October 1777, by the inhabitants of Montego Bay, Jamaica. This bowl to his daughter, Margaret.
   To his wife, £100. Daughter Margaret to have his diamond ring, given him by John Pelly Atkins Esq. of London, on his marriage with Jordan's niece. Also to Margaret, his gold watch, with gold chain and seals, formerly belonging to his late brother, the Rev. Thomas Jordan. Monies to be invested in Public Funds, this and other investment interest to wife for life. After her death to daughter Margaret.

Joseph Miller, Yeoman Farmer. Will dated 8th June 1694.
   To daughter Elizphalett Rivers the wife of Jonathan Rivers of Chatham, Carpenter; his farmhouse where he now lives, and barns, stables, orchards, etc. Upon condition that his wife Hannah remains in possession until the next Lady Day after his death. After that his wife, servants and workmen to have liberty to fell and cut 80 trees on the land before Lady Day, next; and to sell the wood to pay any of his debts. If Jonathan Rivers pays Hannah £60 in lieu of the trees, Hannah will accept. Farm house and land in occupation of William Woodland and 2 properties and land in occupation of James Waters and [Widow] Holt in Allhallows to daughter Margaret Miller. If she has no issue, the same 3 properties and land to his wife Hannah after death of Margaret, for life. After Hannah's death, property in occupation of Widow Holt in Allhallows to Elizabeth Baker, daughter of John Baker, late of Stoke, Husbandman. After death of wife Hannah 2 properties in occupation of James Waters and William Woodland in Allhallows and Hoo to his right heirs, provided Hannah receives rents until daughter Margaret is 18 years old.
   Property and land in occupation of Marndy? Whiffen, and land now sown with wheat lying in or near Mr Faunce's land in occupation of Widow Taylor, now in his own possession, in Hoo, to Hannah for life. After her death to daughter Margaret.
  Marsh land called Oakham Ness in Hoo, of about 110 acres, in his possession to wife Hannah to sell and dispose of. Jonathan Rivers to pay the poor of Hoo out of estate left to Hannah, 20s a year for 4 years after his death. To cousin William Starr 20s. All residue to Hannah, she sole Executor.

Dorothy Plumley, Widow of Hoo. Will dated 11th January 1614/15.
   "Sicke and weake in bodie", she wishes "my bodie to be buryed in the chancel of the parish church".
To the poor of Hoo 20s to be distributed on day of her burial. To four men who carry her body to the church [   ].
   To sister Elizabeth Yonge, Widow, 10s; to Ann Barber "my [   ]", 40s; to Thomas Barber her Godson, son of John Barber, 20s at 24 years; to daughter in law Elizabeth [   ] 40s, to daughter in law Joan Barber wife of Ezekiell Barber and to Hellin Hurlstone wife of Marke Hurls[tone] each 40s.
   To William Plumley her son in law a featherbed, feather bolster of the middle sort, two [   ] sheets, a hempen table cloth, two pewter platters, two pewter dishes, brass candlestick, brass pot of the middle sort, also [   ] pounds.
   To Elizabeth Plumley and Ann Plumley daughters of John Plumley, my brother in law [   ]s each; to John Plumley her bedstead and furniture in the chamber [   ], two of best feather beds, [   ] of her best bolster, four best feather pillows, [   ] of best blankets, a coverlet, four best chests, twelve pairs of good sheets, two table clothes, four best pillow beares, dozen best table napkins, [   ] towels. To John Plumley her son, table standing in the [   ] chamber , [   ] cupboard in same chamber, little cupboard, , dozen best pewter platters, dozen best pewter dishes, two pewter candlesticks, [   ] candlesticks of best sort, dozen [   ] dishes, two brass kettles of best sort, ten of best truggs, one of best [pots?] "I use to put milk in", one best spittle, one best dripping pan.
   To Sarah Plumley the [   ] of John Plumley, son in law, £20, , [   ] good sheets and two table clothes at 21 years.
   To daughter in law, wife of son John Plumley, a silver bowl, silver [   ], one dozen [silver?] spoons.
   To son John Plumley, one silver spoon which was given at his christening [   ].
   James Plumley, Executor, Mr John Reader and John Rowle, Overseers, to them , 40s for their pains.
   To Anne Plumley, d[aughter in law] wife of John Plumley, [property?] purchased of John Gipson [ ? ] "and being at the church [ ? ] of St. Warburgh aforesaid"
   To son John, all lands and tenements [ ? ]; if John dies with no heirs, then to daughter, Anne.
   Dorothy Plumley is indebted to Augustine Morland, Gent. in the sum of £400, mortgage on land and tenement to Morland. Son John is indebted to her in sum of £133, seems he is to pay off £133 of the £400. From her woodland, timber to the value of £100 towards discharge of the £400. Rents of land and property to son John until he is 21, to pay towards the £400. Son John £50 at 21 years, from rents of her land ? Lands and tenements willed to him at 21 years.

John Plumley
of Hoo, Gentleman. Will dated 6th December 1656.
   £200 Marriage bond to be paid to wife, Jane out of estate. Such of his household goods as wife desires to value of £200; and silver beaker which was her father's, a silver wine cup, plus residue, except things in possession of Executors of will of Anne Plumley, his late sister. These to be sold at best value, after £200 is paid to wife, surplus, after paying legatees of Anne Plumley's will, to his three daughters, Elizabeth, Mary and Jane Plumley at 21 years. In meantime interest to fund their education.
   To poor of Hoo 40s paid on either, Feast of St. John Baptist or St. John the Divine, which occurs first after his death.
   To cousin Jane Edwards and Joan Neade 20 s each. To Mark Edwards and Elizabeth the daughter of Joan Neade 10 s each at 21 years. Wife Jane and John Plaistow of Rochester, Gentleman, his wife's nephew, Executors. Wife to have according to marriage agreement £40 annuity out of real estate. If she accepts house he now lives in, in Coy? Street in Hoo and three pieces of land "below the highway and against the Town House", in lieu of £15 of the above £40, then she to have house for life. Also to her property and land in Goodnestone and Wingham in occupation of Mr Edward Boyse and William Powes, she to keep properties in good repair. After wife's death the above properties to his daughter Elizabeth Plumley for ever.
Also to daughter Elizabeth property and land in Huck? Street, Hoo, lately bought from William Lewen, and following land, for ever:
   2 acres adjoining latter lately purchased from William Cobham, Gent.
   6 acres, formerly two pieces, adjoining above.
   3 acres adjoining above, called Peanes? Meade.
   2 acres called Brinsted Downe Meade lying by gate "going to the other Bottom Lands of 1½ acres of meadow lying at lower end of last 2 pieces.
   1½ acres at the bottom of Brinsted Downe Mead , bounded on the west by Sir Edward Hales land.
3 ½ acres near a lane called Duovie ? Lane on the north and land of Sir Edward Hales on the south.
   5 acres of land called Milstead late bought from William Cobham.
   Further land near a stable called Parsonage Stable in Church Street.
   To daughter Mary, Mansion House and land where he now lives, on both sides of the highway, in all 20 acres, after death of wife, forever. Also 3½ acres on north of highway leading to Stoke; 2 acres in the Common Field, late that of Mr Francis Merritt; and 4 acres called Conduit Head; and 3 acres, in two pieces, in a Common Field called Middle Collopes; and 6 acres called Upper Collopes adjoining highway above Clay Hill leading to Hoo Pitt Ponds; and 3 acres in one field with last mentioned 6 acres. 3 acres called Little Collopes, part of that bought from William Cobham; 2 acres in the Common Field "against Betters", 1 acre of which bought from William Cobham, the other 1 acre from Peter Pilcher. More land adjoining his house bought from Peter Pilcher; half a property in Hoo Street near the Bridge, bought from Peter Pilcher; house in Wystreet in Hoo bought from William Cobham, of 2½ acres of meadow;10 acres in three pieces called Ropers; 1 acre near Peckham [   ], "being now in exchange with John Kent for an acre of his" in the Common Field; ½ acre in Hickfield Haw bought from William Cobham, all to daughter Mary, for ever.
   To daughter Jane property and land called Great Farm in St. Mary's, and land in St. Mary's, High Halstow and Stoke, in occupation of Widow Fletcher; property called Little Farm and lands in St. Mary's in occupation of Thomas Horstead, for ever.
