Some Kentish Gravestones & other notes

The Monumental Inscriptions in the church and churchyard of the St Peter & St Paul's  Church in the Parish of Luddesdown, Kent
With concise (pre 1858) wills, notes and photographs with an Index at end.
Compiled and photographed by Ted Connell. Wills by D. E. Williams 2020

Sir Thomas Colyer Colyer-Fergusson recorded 131 M.I.s in the graveyard, plus 6 inside the church, a total of 137, that includes 45 from the modern section of the graveyard. The latest M.I. recorded being that of Frank Alan Eaton buried March 1914.
Leland Duncan recorded only 61 M.I.s in September 1921 having excluded the modern section of the graveyard except for the war memorial, but including 3 that Colyer-Fergusson failed to record.
Here the M.I.s have been listed in alphabetical order to best illustrate connections between family members buried, with Colyer-Fergusson's original numbers in square brackets.
Of particular interest are the ten
terra cotta headstones, eight of which were recorded by Colyer-Fergusson, many of which survive to this day.

THE REV’D GLOVER MUNGEAM M.A.
TEN YEARS CURATE OF THIS PARISH
WHO DIED 15TH MAY 1853
AGED 77 YEARS

Reverend Glover Mungeam of Meopham.
He appoints John Sharp the Elder of Thames Street, London, Orange Merchant and son Glover Mungeam, trustees and executors.
To them, his house in Tonbridge, now occupied by George Stenning?, Esquire, upon trust, for his wife Elizabeth Mungeam, for her lifetime, and, after her death, upon trust, for his son, William Martin, for ever.
To his wife, an annuity of £35 for life, these legacies are in lieu of her Dower Rights. The annuity to be charged on the estate left to his daughter, Sarah Sharp.
Also to his wife, linen and furniture to the value of £50
To son, Glover, for ever, his two cottages and gardens in South Street, Meopham, occupied by William Pope and Thomas Cogger.
To son, William Martin, half of his library, after daughter Sarah Sharp, wife of Richard Sharp, has selected 25 volumes for herself, provided she does not break up any set of books.
Also to Sarah, £250, chargeable on his freeholds and real estate in Meopham, devised to son, Glover.
To his grandchildren, Jannett Lucy and Mary Susan Mungeam, children of his son, William Martin, £100 each at 21 years of age, these sums also charged on his Meopham properties.
To his trustees, his freehold house on the east side of Tonbridge, occupied by Edward Garnell, Solicitor; also his leasehold house in Clover Street, Chatham, upon trust, to take the profits and pay them to his daughter, Sarah, for life.
After her death, to remain in trust, for the benefit of her children, equally shared at 21 years of age or day of marriage for girls, if earlier.
If Sarah leaves no children, the property, in trust for sons, William Martin and Glover, equally shared.
To daughter, Sarah, his linen, china and furniture of the bedrooms of his dwelling house, except the eight day alarm clock, pair of silver buckles and purse of silver coins, which are to go to son, Glover; also except anything his wife may choose.
To son, Glover, for ever, his own freehold house in Meopham, also 20 acres of freehold land near Coffin Lane, Meopham, also his small freehold farm, near Scabing? Street, Meopham, this is 15 acres of land, a house and buildings in his own occupation, and a freehold cottage in Meopham, occupied by Thomas Crowhurst, subject to a charge of £250 for his daughter, Sarah and the payment of the legacies to his two grand daughters.
If son, Glover, dies in testator's lifetime, and not married, then the property devised to him, to son William Martin and daughter, Sarah.
Also to son, Glover, his eight day clock, silver buckles and purse of silver coins, also his money and securities for money, live and dead stock, goods, chattels, rights, credits, and personal estate and effects, not before given, subject to payment of his debts, funeral and probate costs and legacies, provided the £35 annuity for his wife, from the house in Tonbridge, devised to daughter, Sarah, should ever be in arrears over 42 days, it will be lawful for his wife to enter the property and distrain it until the arrears are paid.
After the death of Sarah, trustees can let on lease, not exceeding 21 years, having obtained her consent, while she lived.
Witnesses: Thomas Cheesman, Solicitor, Gravesend and W. Scott, Junior, his Clerk.

Codicil 15th May 1848
He has bequeathed daughter, Sarah, £250, he now revokes this.
He gives his grand daughter, Annie Sharp, daughter of Sarah, £200 at 21 years of age, charged on property left to son, Glover. Property left to son Glover also subject to mortgages, debt and interest secured on it. The legacies to his grand daughters to be paid by son, Glover bequest and not from his personal estate.
To his trustees, all estate which may be vested in him as trustee of mortgagee.
   Rest of will confirmed.
Witnesses: Thomas Cheesman and Walter Scott.

Codicil 5th October 1849
John Sharp has died since the Codicil above, so his friend Richard Southgate?, of Sutton, Surrey, Schoolmaster, now replaces him as executor and trustee. Grand daughter, Annie Sharp has also died, so her legacy is void.
He now gives his grandson, Henry Martin Sharp son of Richard and Sarah Sharp, at 21 years of age, £100, charged on the Meopham estate left to son Glover.
Thomas Cheesman of Gravesend to have power to adjudge any dispute that may arise among his children concerning the will.

Translation of the above inscription by Canon W. Masfen Roberts, Rector of Luddesdown,
for Smetham’s Rambles Around Churches, published in 1926

Stephen Thornton, Rector of this church, has set this up to be a
memorial of the ruin of his house, in the year of Christ 1725
Stephen, Jelfe, William, Hadassah, Frances, Anne a progeny
born as though only to die, left life’s stage as soon as they had entered it.
Phoebe Flint, a sister, was added to this band, December 1st 1705
Samuel Thornton, born Aug 22nd 1694 was at length admitted
to the Sacred Ministry, and after doing admirable work
in it for five years entered into rest September 5th 1722
A second Stephen, a youth, devout, scholarly and of fairest promise,
born January 19th 1701 was carried off by a decline, May 26th 1723
his loss was deeply regretted amongst all good people.
Mary Thornton, a member of the old and distinguished family
of Booth, a devoted wife, a wise and affectionate mother
and pre-eminent in all other virtues, departed to join her children
August 17th 1724
Priscilla, a child worthy of her mother, was for a long time a
faithful comfort and stay of her father’s old age but, alas!,
far from strong, with bodily powers at length shattered but
mental faculties unimpaired she followed her mother February 1st
1743, nearly 47 years of age, the joyous harbinger of her father’s coming.
Stephen Thornton, the author of this family and memorial, after
discharging his duties in this church for 63 years, closed the long
death roll of his children with his own on August 27th 1744 in the
87th year of his age
Mary Thornton, daughter of Stephen and Mary Thornton
and, after the ruin of her family commemorated above, the last
survivor, wished her own remains to be deposited near those of
her father. She died September 29th in the 73rd year of her age and
year of Salvation 1778

Terra cotta headstones

Of particular interest are the ten terra cotta headstones, eight of which were recorded by Colyer-Fergusson and two recorded by Leland Duncan, many of which survive to this day, 2020.
In two articles in the North West Kent Family History Society (NWKFHS) Journal Vol.12 no. 5, March 2011 pages 200-202 and Vol. 12 no. 8, December 2011 pages 339-341, by David Cufley and Bob Woodward describe various designs, size, type of inscription etc mostly from Luddesdown where they visited in 2004.
The gravestones were Patented Terra Cotta Memorials by sculptor Henry Grimsley, and were manufactured by Oxford Artistic Monumental and Terra Cotta Manufacturing Company which, in 1886, were advertised in Jackson’s Journal of Oxford (See link below).
Illustrated in the first NWKFHS article, amongst others is the gravestone of Sarah wife of Thomas EVENDEN who was taken to her rest April 8th 1880 aged 75 years. M.I. number 39 in the above list and photographed in 2004 by David, has now seemingly disappeared. So far I have been unable to find it in 2020.

Other whole or fragments of terra cotta headstones found in various places around the churchyard are pictured below.

Picture Ha was photographed in a general view of the churchyard by me during a visit in 2011. It was situated in the mostly open area of grass to the East of the path running from the church to the carpark, nearly opposite graves M.I.s 100-104. Sadly it had lost the inserted plaque with details of the person commemorated.

Picture Hb is a view of a headstone, possibly Ha, lying flat on the grass just West of the path and North of M.I.s 100-104. The letters I.H.S. can just be made out in the damaged area of the cross. Sadly it has lost the inserted plaque with details of the person commemorated. Colyer-Ferguson only noted one headstone with I.H.S. and that is already illustrated above on G  M.I. 122.

Picture J is a headstone, leaning against the churchyard wall just to the South East of the South Porch of the church. It has sadly lost the inserted plaque with details of the person commemorated. There are also three footstones.

Picture K is part of a headstone lying flat imbedded in the grass just to East of M.I. no 51. The top is missing and has sadly lost the inserted plaque with details of the person commemorated. In the recess can be seen keying/scoring marks in the clay to act as a key for when the plaque was inserted and mortared in.

Picture L Three more footstones leaning against the churchyard wall to the North West of the church hidden by trees.

Pictures Ma and Mb are a portion of the broken shaft of a headstone probably from the top of  M.I. 59. The method of construction of terra cotta headstones is apparent. Slabs of clay of suitable thickness were rolled out and cut to the required dimensions. In this example the slab is probably placed into a wooden mould and the sides folded up. A separate similar thickness piece of clay is placed upright centrally to form the centre rib. The remaining flaps of clay are then folded over and luted onto the top of the central rib. The top section, including the cross was probably made separately from the body section and then luted on. In the fragment above you can see where two plugs of clay were pressed into the internal spaces to strengthen the joint. The headstones were made from a virtually iron free clay, for when fired the surfaces fire to a light buff colour which fits perfectly for use as a headstone.

Picture N Is an almost complete headstone leaning against the outside of the North wall of the Navel. Again, sadly it has lost the inserted plaque with details of the person commemorated. The area inside the centre of the cross is damaged and it is not clear what was there, i.e. a rose or a lamb with a flag.

It is probable that the inserted plaques are made of stone. It is clear from the keying/scoring marks on K how they were fixed on with mortar.

Some of the headstones, A, E and J did not have plaques added, but instead details were engraved quite neatly into the flat surface of the recess that had not been keyed/scored during the firing process when manufactured. The headstones are normally flat on the back, but headstone E has been quite deliberately formed with a recess on both sides, with a lamb and a flag on one side, and a rose on the other.

In the NWKFHS Journal articles David Cufley and Bob Woodward proposed four main categories of the headstones present.

Type 1   A base forming a rectangle from which a shaft springs, with slightly concave shoulders. The upper part forms a cross with a circle attached. Colyer-Fergusson described these as in the form of a Maltese cross.

Pictures above:-

Type 2   A base forming a rectangle from which a shaft springs, with either sloping shoulders or steps. The upper part forms a simple cross, either with a rose, a lamb and flag or the letters I.H.S.

Type 3   A base forming a rectangle from which a shaft springs, with sloping shoulders. The upper part forms a simple cross that has been inset with a carved flower that Colyer-Fergusson described as a lily.

Type 4   Seen by David Cufley and Bob Woodward and illustrated in the NWKFHS Journal as similar to Type 3 but with a more ornate cross in the shape of a fleur de lis

More examples of terra cotta headstones and the adverts for their sale, can be seen on the following websites

Gravestones at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery, Oxford sculpted by the Grimsley family

St Mary & St John Churchyard, Cowley St John, Oxford

The terra cotta headstones in Luddesdown Churchyard date from 1855 through to 1899. Interestingly that on the 4th May 1888, the company making Grimsleys’ terracotta grave markers went into liquidation.

These terra cotta headstones are rather unusual. If you know of any other examples in Kent I would very much like to hear from you. ted.connell@btinternet.com
