Christchurch Burial Ground, Upper Luton Rd, Luton, Chatham M.I.s

with Index of names at end

Back to Kentish Gravestones & other notes introduction

Introduction

The first church on this site was built in 1843; the registers date from 1852, the year of the first burial. The original church was on the same plot as the burial ground, and was replaced by a new church in 1885 on a site on the opposite side of Upper Luton Road. This church was in turn replaced by a new structure in recent times. Despite the small size of the site and the fact that a good portion was taken up by the church, over 1,400 burials took place here between 1852 and 1958, the last burial was of ashes. Although a small L shape extension was added c. 1860, no further expansion took place, and Chatham Cemetery was used by the majority of the local population.
The transcriber first recorded the inscriptions in 1996 when the site was extremely overgrown, and this revision includes items missed or mis-transcribed in 1996, and follows the layout of the original inscriptions.
After 1996 the site was laid out as a small park, but unfortunately has now deteriorated once again.
Following the collapse of the north wall in 2009 and subsequent rebuild a number of stones, which had at some time been placed against the wall, are now missing and some have been half buried!
