Monumental Inscriptions of St Nicholas Cemetery, Maidstone Road, Rochester

Section A  comprises the whole area north of the main (west – east) cemetery road as far as the north wall and from the Maidstone Road to the transverse tarmac path just east of the monuments to John Ross Foord, Henry Pye and John Nightingale Boys.

Census, Louise  Knighton ran the school at Eastgate House, Rochester (from the 1871 census). She is described as a distinguished poet and essayist, but have not traced any work. Some of William Knighton's work still in print! He can found him online, don't confuse him with George IV's doctor.

JOHN YATES WAS VARIOUSLY, SECRETARY OF A STEAM SHIP COMPANY,
FARMER AND LIMEBURNER, (THE LATTER IN WOULDHAM).

THIS TOMB STANDS ISOLATED FROM THE REST OF THE CEMETERY,
CLOSE TO THE MAIDSTONE ROAD. THIS WAS PROBABLY AN EXPENSIVE
POSITION. DID THE YATES FAMILY SEEK THE ATTENTION OF PASSERS BY ?
