Monumental Inscriptions of St
Peter & St Paul Church, Shorne -
recorded by D. E. Williams 2013
Introduction
Interior of
Church Some of these inscriptions are
sourced from John Thorpe's Registrum Roffenses, published in 1769. Some
of those recorded by Thorpe are now lost or hidden, e.g. by fitted carpets, etc.
Section A
is all that area east of the porch to the east end of the chancel and from the
church to the north churchyard wall. The numbers refer to the numbers on the
plan. Dates before 1752 are under the Julian calendar, where the year changes on
25th March, so January 1725 is 1726 in the modern Gregorian calendar.
Inscriptions in boxes thus: [ ] are missing in the original and have been
reconstructed from the Registers or other sources. Inscriptions are arranged
alphabetically.
Section B
is the small triangular area, between the stone path to the porch and the grass
path leading from the gate to the tower. The numbers refer to the positions on
the plan.
Section C
is the area from the North Churchyard wall to the southern end of the tower,
bounded on the east by the grass path; on the west by the bank, below the modern
extension and to the south by the hedge beyond which is the area used for
cremation burials. The numbers correspond to the numbers on the plan. No.123
-139 are laying flat on the bank
Section D All
the monumental in this section are east of the east end of the church. Number
146 is slightly to the north of the church. All other monument due east of the
church are modern.
Section E
is the area south of the church, from the path on the east to the edge of the
new area for cremation burials on the west, and south to the old churchyard
boundary. The numbers refer to the position on the plan. Only monuments pre
– 1930 have been recorded.
