INTRODUCTION
Churchyards include much historical evidence, not all of which survives elsewhere. Of particular importance, of course, is the information about local people: dates of death (rather than of burial as in the registers) and details of relationships within and between families. Often other interesting points emerge: ‘born in Gloucestershire’, ‘died at Monte video’, ‘of Spratts Brook Farm, Tunbridge Wells’ are three instances here. Some researchers may be interested in the stone-work itself: the types, styles, symbolic designs, or even the masons; others may collect the verses and epitaphs.
Time, weathering, erosion, damage by plants or man, all contribute to the decay of these memorials. We are fortunate that some Snodland inscriptions were noted in times past; this is the record of how things stood in 1984.
There are very few stones here dating back beyond 1800, and of those the greater number are now illegible. The oldest is the Wray family chest tomb east of the tower (c.1685). Originally the churchyard consisted of about half-an-acre, but in 1867, William Poynder, whose father had once owned the cement works, offered an additional half-acre on the north and west of the site if the Parish would provide a wall for it. This was done at a cost of £225 and the new ground was consecrated by Bishop Leigh of Rochester on October 20th that year. In September 1869 William Lee, the current owner of the cement works, spent £51 on providing trees and shrubs. Do any of these remain today? In 1905 the vestry was enlarged and it is probable that some memorials were moved to allow this. Certainly a drawing of 1841 shows a different arrangement of the group of stones now outside the vestry door. The churchyard was closed (with certain exceptions) in 1898, by which time the village cemetery was available. During the early 1950’s a large number of the memorials were lifted and placed (mostly) against the north wall. It is unfortunate that no record seems to have been made of their original positions, though one or two can be identified in old photographs. Today the churchyard is maintained by the Parish.
The inscriptions listed here have been collected over a period of five or six years. Many memorials are worn or damaged, and those against the wall tend to disappear behind ivy or brambles, so the task has not always been easy. However, repeated visits have caused some difficult inscriptions to yield up their secrets, though a good many illegible items remain. The church registers have sometimes helped solve problems with dates. I think there will be little more that can be deciphered on site, but there is always the possibility of finding old transcriptions or photographs which will add to the story.
At some time a proper and systematic survey should be undertaken, following guidelines suggested by the Council for British Archaeology, but many will find these lists adequate for their needs. In addition to recording the extant inscriptions, I have included details of some now lost, but copied in the past. Also, this seemed the place to publish the series of notes made for, or by, the parish sexton between 1785 and 1796. They survive as loose sheets within one of the church registers [Heritage Centre, Strood: P342/l/2]. Many indicate the position of burials and clarify relationships between some of Snodland’s eighteenth century parishioners.
Unless otherwise stated, each memorial is a headstone, with the inscription facing east. No attempt has been made here to copy the use of capitals and lower case letters of the originals.
Andrew Ashbee. April 1984
Postscript (1997). It is remarkable how worn the inscriptions have become in the few years since the survey was made.
