SAD DROWNING CASE IN THE MEDWAY  -   Kent Messenger,7th July 1894
An accident of a most distressing nature occurred on Friday evening in the Medway. Four young men, named Arthur Anderson, Ernest Sutton, George Cheetham and George Frederick Silver, upon leaving off work at Messrs. Aveling and Porter’s engineering factory, proceeded to Wickham Point to bathe. This spot, it appears is exceedingly dangerous to bathers. Anderson suddenly got out of his depth. Silver hastened to his assistance, but he, too, was dragged into deep water, and then Cheetham swam out and made a most determined and plucky attempt to save them from drowning. He was pulled under, and nearly lost his own life.
A boat containing three young gentlemen, --- Messrs. East J. Rolfe, C. K. Spencer, and A.G. Fremlin, members of the Medway Rowing Club --- happened to be passing, and rowed to the spot. Spencer and Fremlin, with commendable promptness, dived into the water with the idea of saving the lives of the two young men who had disappeared. Their attempts, however, were unsuccessful. Rolfe then entered the water, and on diving down succeeded in rescuing Anderson; but failed to recover the body of Silver. Sutton, immediately he saw that his companions were in danger, jumped into the river, without waiting to remove his clothes, and did his best to reach them.
Anderson was quite unconscious when taken ashore. Mr. Spencer, with the assistance of others adopted the usual methods for resuscitating life, and succeeded in restoring animation. On Saturday he had sufficiently recovered to leave his bed.
The body of the unfortunate young man Silver was recovered five hours later, and conveyed to the city mortuary. Anderson is a married man, with two children.
INQUEST
An inquest was held by Mr. Bell, at the Guildhall, on Saturday, when the statements above were corroborated by George Silver, George Cheetham, Mr. Henry John Rolfe, a student at Messrs. Arkcoll’s brewery, and John Hughes, a shipwright, who failed in finding the body with grappling irons and boat hooks, but succeeded in doing so when the tide ebbed.--- The jury returned a verdict of "death from misadventure", and the foreman remarked that the jury unanimously wished to commend the courageous conduct of the witness Rolfe. – We understand that the Mayor of Rochester and Superintendent Broadbridge are moving to secure the Royal Humane Society’s medal for Mr. Rolfe’ They will also place the names of others who attempted to save life before the society.

STROOD WOMAN FATALLY BURNED   -   Chatham Observer, March 13th 1896
The City Coroner, Mr. West H. Bell, held an inquest at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, on Tuesday morning, on the body of Ellen Godfrey, Who was admitted to the hospital on February 26th suffering from severe burns.— Mr. J. T. Ogden was chosen foreman of the jury. Thomas Edward Godfrey, of 6, Newark Street, Strood, said the deceased was his wife, and she was 24 years of age. He was away from home when the accident occurred, his wife being in the hospital when he returned.
She told him she was sitting over the fire in the living room and dozed off to sleep, and was awoke by her clothes being in flames. She could not account for her clothes catching fire. He felt sure she was sober; she was not in the habit of drinking much.
John Hills, fisherman, of 4, Newark Street, said he was awoke early on the morning of the 26th February by his wife, and he then heard screams. He opened the door, and saw the deceased lying on the ground in the yard in flames. He put the flames out with water, and a constable removed her to the hospital. He afterwards went and put out the fire at deceased’s house, the hearthrug and canvas being in flames.
P.C. Welch, who was attracted to the house by hearing the screams, said he finished putting out the flames by wrapping his cape around the deceased. He carried her to Dr. Packman, and after he had dressed the wounds brought her to the hospital in a cab.
Dr. Ludford Cooper, house surgeon at the hospital, said when admitted deceased was suffering from extensive and serious burns on the legs, trunk and arms. She died on Monday morning from exhaustion, the result of the burns.
The witness Hills, recalled, said it appeared to him that the chimney had caught fire, as burning soot kept falling into the room.
The jury returned a verdict of "Death by misadventure".

FATAL BOATING DISASTER AT GILLINGHAM   -   Chatham Observer, May 5th 1900
On Wednesday three shop assistants hired a boat at the Sun Pier and went for a row down the river. Off Gillingham they got into the swell caused by the Government tug Buster, and, failing to keep their boat head on to it, the craft was overturned. One of the occupants, Baitup, could not swim, and he sank "like a stone" , his companions having no opportunity of affording him assistance. Deceased was 18 years old and belonged to Tonbridge, having come to Rochester only a few weeks since, and was an only son.

LAD DROWNED WHILST BATHING
A sad bathing fatality occurred in the River Medway, off Wickham, on Sunday morning, a lad named Alfred Baker, aged 17, a horse driver at the factory, being drowned. The body was recovered later in the day, and conveyed to the mortuary to await an inquest.
The inquest was held before Mr. West J. Harris (County Coroner), and a jury composed entirely of Wickham workmen, in the chapel of Strood cemetery on Monday evening, Mr. W. H. Pounds being foreman of the jury.
Alfred Baker, father of the deceased, said the deceased lived with him at 81, Cuxton Road, Strood. He last saw him alive at 9.30 o’clock on Sunday morning, when he left home to go and feed his horses.
Robert Stevens, of 29, Gun-lane, Strood said he worked with the deceased. On Sunday morning, about 11.30 o’clock, the deceased with George Kidney and witness, went down to the river near Wickham Factory. Deceased said he should go into the water for a swim, and asked witness and Kidney to accompany him. They refused, as it was too cold, and only deceased could swim out of the three. Deceased stripped and plunged into the water. He swam out towards the middle of the stream and threw his arms up and said "That is the depth". The water was then up to his neck. Deceased then swam out from seven to eight yards further, when he cried for help and sank.
Witness waded into the water to look for him., but could not see him. He called a boat, but it came too late. Deceased never rose after once disappearing beneath the surface.
The Coroner: I can’t see what he could be thinking of to go into the water, especially after the weather we have experienced lately.
Witness: He was headstrong to go in, sir.
The Coroner: Yes, and you see he has had to pay the penalty.
   P. Corpl. Peacock, stationed at Cuxton, said on receiving information on Sunday afternoon, he went to the spot described by the last witness, and found that the body had just been got onto the foreshore. He conveyed it to the mortuary at the Cemetery. There were no marks of violence on the body. It was quite stiff.
The father of the deceased, in reply to the Coroner, said he was quite satisfied the affair was a pure accident.
Alfred Ware said he found the body 200 yards from where it disappeared.
A verdict of "Death by Misadventure" was returned.
