FATAL FALL FROM THE TOWER OF ROCHESTER CASTLE
Maidstone
Journal, 6th May 1893
On Tuesday afternoon, a sad accident happened to a little boy named William Alfred Boswell, aged eight, at Rochester Castle. It appears he had climbed to the top of the old tower, above the main entrance from the esplanade, and in reaching over to obtain some wild flowers, over balanced himself and fell upon the row of spikes below. One of them entered his neck, and others pierced other parts of the body. The Rev. Groves, Vicar of Cliff, happened to see the accident, and was one of the first to render assistance. The poor little fellow was at once taken to the Bridge Chamber and attended by Dr. Atkin, but his injuries produced death in a very short time. His body was conveyed on a stretcher to his home in Taylor’s Lane.
THE INQUEST
An inquest was held at Strood Hall, on Thursday, when the Rev. P. Groves, rector of Cliffe, stated that as he was passing down the hill towards Rochester Bridge, he saw the deceased slip and fall over, and he became impaled on an iron fence. The poor little fellow remained in this position, with his hands hanging loosely over the fence, until witness and a man named Selling, caretaker of the Bridge Chamber, lifted him off. Blood poured from the wounds as the deceased was being carried into the chambers. – Alfred Selling and Dr. Atkin also gave evidence. – The jury returned a verdict of "Death through misadventure".

The Times, 4th January 1904
On Saturday afternoon, whilst a large number of persons were skating on a piece of water at Derby, known locally as the Dead Waters, the ice suddenly broke, and a young lady named Rose Selwood fell in.
Others went to her rescue, when the ice further gave way, with the result that altogether seven persons were immersed. The water at the spot was very deep. Two swam to the bank, and one of them, with a rope fastened around his waist, returned with the object of saving Miss Selwood. In this he failed, and was dragged to the side in an exhausted condition. Miss Selwood and two men were then got out in a state of unconsciousness, and artificial means of respiration were applied. These were successful in the case of the men, who were able to go home, but Miss Selwood was beyond human aid, Three-quarters of an hour later the dead bodies of Frederick George Patterson, aged 30, and Sidney Saunders, aged 20, were recovered, and, together with the body of Miss Selwood, were removed to the public mortuary to await an inquest. Patterson was a moulder employed at a Derby foundry, whose friends reside at Strood, Rochester….
