Messenger, 10th March 1888
Mr. West H. Bell coroner for Rochester, on Thursday afternoon held an
inquest at the Guildhall, on the body of a young bargeman named Frederick
William Wicker, who was drowned on the previous day. It appears that
deceased was mate of Messrs. Peters’ barge "John", of which his
brother, Thos. Wicker its master. The barge was tacking down the river
between Burham and Wouldham about five o’clock on Wednesday evening, and
apparently deceased was caught by the main sail and knocked overboard. He
disappeared at once, and life was extinct when his body was recovered. The
jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death"
