Q. What was the playground like in those days?
A. Well, not much of a place.

Q. Was it Mud?
A. No, gravel. I don’t remember it being that muddy. Of course in those days, upkeep of the playground, building, everything was the responsibility of the Church Authorities.

Q. Did you get any visitations from the Parson?
A. Oh, yes, that old rector. Old Lambard – a nice old stick. He used to come in two or three times during the day and stand with his hands behind his

back in front of the fire. We never used to have to take no notice of him, but if his wife came or his niece or anyone else, ‘course we all had to stand at attention. But we never knew when he was going to drop in.

Q. It must have been a bit crowded with over 100 in the school?
A. Yes.

Q. Did you have a school uniform?
A. No, we didn’t. Poor little rips. Some of them who I’ve spoken to since didn’t even have a best.
