Q. What was the discipline like in school,
was it very strict?
A. Yes, yes it had to be though when you come to think of it
plenty of times from 11.00 till dinner time I was in charge
during my last two or three years. Meyers was very popular –
did I tell you? – and it was when the tradesmen and farmers
began to realise that there was such a thing as income tax, of
course they didn’t understand these things at all. They used
to come to him, come knocking at the door, he’d give them a
minute or two, and, ‘Here Bill’ (he always called me Bill,
he wouldn’t never |
|
call me Fred because I’d never been
christened) ‘look after them while I’m gone.’ And off
he’d go down the Swan with them. That’s the only one
weakness that he’d got. Well he was a company man you see and
liked a glass of beer. So off he’d go and fill their forms in
for them, come back five minutes to twelve – prayers – and
we all jumped up.
Q. Was he very strict if you did anything wrong?
A. Oh yes he caned, he kept you under control alright, but not
in a vicious way. |
