Woman of 61 Who Refuses To
Retire

NOTICE
"I CAN GO ON TO 65"
Villagers of Ash, Near Gravesend, are supporting
Miss Alice Wright, 61-year-old Head teacher of the local church
school, who is resisting the Kent Education Committee’s action
in terminating her appointment. Miss Wright declined to retire
at the request of the committee, and was given notice after 27
years at the school.
"The school managers gave me three months’
notice with out any reason, and I was not even asked to appear
before them," she said today. "I feel well able to
carry on until I am 65."
"One or two London teachers who were evacuated
to the village objected to the way I arranged classes and
complaints were made to the Kent Director of Education.
"He visited the school and I was asked to
retire." |

SAYS EVACUATED TEACHERS ARE CAUSE
Parishioners of Ash near Gravesend, have
passed a vote of confidence in Miss Alice Wright, head teacher
of the local church school for 27 years and have asked Kent
Education Committee to reconsider her dismissal. Miss Wright,
who is 61, said today : "I feel well able to carry on until
I’m 65."
"One or two London teachers evacuated to the
village objected to the way I arranged the classes and
complaints were made to the KENT director of Education."
"After he had visited the school I was
asked to retire. And because I refused I was given notice."
One of the school managers said Miss Wright has reached the
voluntary retiring age and the Kent Education Committee have
asked her more than once to retire. |
