Up to
the time of the Education Act of 1944 the school was a Church of
England School and from 70 to 80 children of all ages attended.
During the period of Miss Wright’s control the
activities of the school were many, apart from the ordinary
curriculum. There was a swimming class of 25 members who attended
either the Kingsdown or Sevenoaks swimming baths, and several of
them underwent a course in life-saving. They also sent trained
entries for the annual athletics sports meeting at Sevenoaks and
considering the size of the school did very well.
The boys were trained in gardening and the senior
girls in cookery. The children were particularly good at dramatics
and gave performances twice yearly in the "Hut".
Miss Wright did a certain amount of private coaching
where a pupil showed promise and consequently had great success in
the scholarship field, several of her pupils having by this means
gained entrance to Gravesend County School, Sevenoaks Grammar
School and Rochester Grammar School for Girls.
Miss Wright was followed by Miss Davies in 1942. Just
before this Miss Barnes had been engaged |

as Assistant
Teacher. In 1948 Mrs Muller became Headmistress.
When the Kent Education Committee took control of the
school after the passing of the Education Act, the school became
Ash Church of England controlled Primary School and most of the
children of 11 years and over were sent to Northfleet Secondary
Modern School, a coach taking them backwards and forwards each
day. After a while they were transferred to Swanscombe, because of
overcrowding at Northfleet. A few go to Gravesend Grammar School,
Gravesend Technical School or St Joseph’s Convent but these
provide their own transport.
