This house is owned by Mrs Campbell now
living in Melrose, Scotland. She also owns the Manor Estates
which she inherited, with the house, from Major Gore Lambard.
The house bears the date 1637 over the porch and was built by
the Fowler family. The main building undoubtedly date from
this time and is one of the best examples to be found of
domestic architecture of the period. At the rear, however, are
the remains of a much older building. In the scullery, with a
little room above it, a relic of the original Manor, is an old well 365 |

feet deep. In one room is to be seen painted panelling, with
beautiful scroll work dating from the erection of the present
building, while three powder closets are also panelled. Among
the most recent tenants of this historic and picturesque house
was the late Captain R.J. Benson who went down with his ship,
the destroyer H.M.S. Exmouth, which was torpedoed in the early
days of the 1939-1945 war.
