Interesting Houses - continued

Corner Farm Cottages
These are situated in West Yoke and are reputed to be 500 years old. There are five cottages and a barn all constructed with huge hand hewn oak timber pegged into position. Undoubtedly there have been alterations and additions from time to time. What is now the shop was probably the farm house at one time and the other cottages were added afterwards. There is a hand hewn oak step in the private part of the shop premises and this is worn into a hollow about six inches deep by people’s feet. Recently, while repairs were being done, a fireplace was uncovered which is thought to be about 500 years old. The late Harry Smith owned this property and the farm for over 50 years before selling it to a Mr. Green from London. He died suddenly after owning the property for but a short time. It was then bought by G. Clark in 1946. He is the present owner. Electricity was installed about 11 years ago.

Berry’s Maple
This is one of the old buildings of the Parish. It is believed to have been at one time an Inn, but not within living memory. There are still people living who remember it as a farmhouse with a cottage attached. The parents of Mr. George Orpin of the Forge occupied the farmhouse and farmed the surrounding land for several years. At a later date the farmhouse and cottage were altered to make one private house and the farmland sold to the late Sir Gerald Hohler K.C., M.P. of Court Lodge, Stansted. It is now being farmed by John W Hollands of Rumney Farm. The house is the property of Mrs Ranger who has made it a very attractive place.
