Will dated 18 November 1637
Hilkiah Reader of Kennington next Ashford, woollendraper.(northern suburb
with own church) To poor of parish of Ashford - 40 shillings,To poor of
parish of Kennington - 20 shillings
To my brother Thomas Reader's children - 40 shillings
To my son Hilkiah Reader - all my counters and shelves in the shop in my
house in Ashford, the great wainscot press that stands in the parlour, and
the wainscot press in the chamber over the hall.
To my wife Lidia - the use and occupation of all the estate and household
goods, as long as she remains a widow. She also has power to sell what she
can spare of the household goods.
After wife's death or remarriage - the household goods to be divided
equally between my children.
Executrix - wife Lidia
Overseers - my good friends John Player of Kennington, clerk; John Knight
of Wye, yeoman; my son-in-law George Co[lt]e of Ashford, woollendraper; my
cousin John Woodgate of Tenterden, yeoman; George Denley of Maidstone; my
brother-in-law Edmund Sherewood of Ashford.
Overseers to receive 20 shillings each, and reasonable expenses.
Overseers to put younger children to suitable employment, or to make them
scholars. My eldest son John Reader to be directed to an employment most
fitting to him.
Lands and tenements -
Wife Lidia to receive £11.6s.8dfrom rents of property in High Halden.
To son John Reader - all messuages, lands and tenements in High Halden, in
recompense of bequests given to him by his grandparents John and Johan
Jeffery.
Wife Lidia to receive £ 11.6s.8d from rents of property in Ashford.
To son Hilkiah Reader - all messuages, lands and tenements in Ashford, in
recompense of bequests given to him by his grandparents John and Johan
Jeffery.
Wife Lidia to receive £ 11.6s.8d from rents of property in Kennington,
Wye, Mersham and Braborne.
To son Paul Reader - all messuages, lands and tenements in Kennington,
Wye, Mersham and Braborne, in recompense of bequests given to him by his
grandparents John and Johan Jeffery.
Executrix, as soon as possible after my decease, should spend £400 on
purchasing land, to be bought in the name of my son Hilkiah Reader. Also
to spend £200 on lands in name of my son Paul Reader, and £200 on lands
in name of my daughter Lidia Colte. Executrix to spend £250 to buy lands
in name of my daughter Abigail Reader.
John Jeffery willed all his lands and tenements in Tenterden (called
Fowlesheet) to my wife Lidia during her life, and after her decease, to
her children. To avoid arguments, Abigail is to receive these lands in
Tenterden.
The executor is to make an account every year, three copies are to be
made; one to remain in hands of executor and two in the hands of the
overseers.
