        John Brasyr
        of Chelsfield dated 24 April 1597
        Abstract of the will of John Brasyr the elder of
        Chelsfield yeoman dated 24 April 1597.
           To be buried in Chelsfield churchyard among my ancestors.
        To the use of the church of Chelsfield for ever 2 sheep to be put in
        stock.  I give 10s. for the reparations of Chelsfield church, and
        to the poor of Chelsfield to be distributed on the day of my burial,
        10s.
           To my son Thomas Brasyr the lease of the house wherein I
        now dwell with all appurtenances, and I leave him the full value of £30
        out of my goods, corn in the field and chattels, to be set out and
        delivered by the discretion of my Executor and Overseers.
           To my daughter Dennys Smale £6.13s.4d. To Thomas Cocke my
        daughter’s son the cupboard in the chamber where I lie, one table and
        one chest in the "gesten chamber", my best cauldron, 5 ewes
        and one pair of sheets.
           To William, Alice and Joane Lysne 20s. each, or more at the
        discretion of my Executor.
           To my son Edmond Brasyr 5 sheep, 2 yearling steers, one
        brass pot and the bed which I lie on.
           To my daughter Agnes 2 sheep, to my son John Brasyr the
        younger 2 sheep, to Lewes Cocke 3 lambs.
           To my daughter Halles children by Williams 4 lambs, or more
        at the discretion of my Executor. To my godson George Smith the younger
        one ewe and a lamb. To the rest of my godchildren who shall demand it
        5d. apiece.
           I make my eldest son John Brasyr of Colgates my Executor,
        by whom all the rest of my goods (my debts and legacies paid) shall be
        ordered.
           I desire Mr. George Smith, Parson of Chelsfield, and John
        Wakelen to be Overseers that my will may be well and duly performed, and
        they to have 3s.4d. each "and my Will and mynde is, That all this
        my Testaments shalbe ordered by the discrecon of the saide George Smith
        And yf there happen any controversye to arryse, He shall ende the same,
        And they he or she, that will not stande in his judgement shall forfeyte
        all that I have geven them notwithstanding anie thinge before saide."
