Abstract of the will of Persevale Smale of Chelsfield
yeoman dated 15 June 1624.
To be buried among the faithful at the discretion of my
Executor.
I give for the buying of necessary books for Chelsfield
church 5s.
To the preacher of my funeral sermon 6s.8d. To the poor of
the parish of Chelsfield 20s. to be distributed on the day of my burial.
To the four children of my son in law and daughter Wakelen
in tokens of remembrance 5s. each.
All residue of my goods and personal estate to the children
of my younger son William Smale equally, and he to be my Executor. I
desire my good friends Henry Godden and John Wakelen the elder to be
Overseers and I give them 3s.4d. each.

Concerning my lands and tenements –
I give to my elder son Thomas Smale and his heirs for ever
my tenement called Pettens and all buildings and lands thereto belonging
in the parishes of Ash and Ridley, in the tenure of William Skudder.
I give to my younger son William Smale and his heirs for
ever my tenement in St. Mary Cray with the orchards, gardens etc. now or
late in the tenure of John Wright: also my tenement and other buildings
and land belonging in St. Mary Cray, and also my meadow in Orpington,
all of which are in the tenure of George Wiborne: and also my other
tenement in St. Mary Cray with orchards etc. now in the tenure of Widow
Staple.
A note "the two blotted lines were made by the
Testator himself. Memo that the raising and striking out of the tenement
and lands of Persevall Smale in the parish of Farnborough in the tenure
of William Abonene given to Thomas his son was stricken out in the
presence of us George Somar, George Smith, Thomas Smith, Daniell Maylin."
