of inspection be brought forward a month, because many of the children are out with their parents in the neighbouring farms strawberry picking from 3.00 or 4.00 in the morning until 9.00 during June and July and are in consequence not fit for school work when they attend!’
   The twentieth century is only two years old when the next significant date occurs – the 1902 Education Act. This immediately results in the formation of a body known as the School Managers. They hold their first meeting in July 1903.15  The managers consist of four members including the chairman, appointed by the Kent Education Committee and two members appointed by the minor (church) authority. At this point the amount

of  material available on the school increases yearly. The minutes of the Managers’ meetings are well documented; both the Ministry of Education and the National Society have a wealth of information. At the same time the material becomes more domestic.
   A minute dated September 6th 1904 mentions the possibility of Night School in Ash, but this is the one and only mention of it and one can assume that this idea came to nothing. In the following year (March 28th), the assistant mistress – there is no name attached, but this could well be Miss Packman, who was at the school with
