At this time the school holidays were approximately; two weeks for Christmas, one week for Easter, a few days for Whitsun; though this was stopped at the start of the war (in fact this is the only direct effect the war had on Ash), then the school was closed from the end of June to the beginning of August for fruit-picking, and a half term, known as the Autumn holiday in October completed the school year.
   The two girls mentioned above, Mabel Hamilton and Florence Costen were appointed as monitoresses on February 14th 1916 to take the place of Miss Skudder who left in January. However they both had a very quick rest for the school was closed from 24th February to 19th 

March due to snow, floods and poor attendance.
   4th September 1916: ‘The children are all very excited this morning as many of them saw their first zeppelin on Saturday night. One passed over the village and dropped bombs in the adjoining village, Longfield. Many of the children saw in the distance, the zeppelin that was bought down.’ This is the first of only two or three mentions of the war in the Log Book. The second being on 31st May 1917 when an aeroplane descended in a field nearby. At playtime the children were taken to see it.’ Then on September 11th the upper girls had their scripture lesson moved so that they could prepare ‘simple war time meals’ for the children who stay to dinner.
