Animal Bone Assessment by Gillian Cramp and Albert Daniels

Location
Martin’s Quarry, now known as Pinden Quarry, is situated on a chalk hillside on the north side of the Longfield valley.

Rescue excavations, prompted by surface stripping, were carried out by members of the Fawkham and Ash Archaeological Group (FAAG) during October and November 1974 and January to April 1979. This led to the discovery of lengths of boundary ditches, pits and postholes. These were dated by pottery to the late Iron Age and early Roman periods, and indicated the presence of a late Iron Age and Romano-British Farmstead.

Collection
An assemblage of animal bones was recovered by hand collection. No sieving was undertaken. However, before the archaeologists arrived on site, machine stripping had occurred, disturbing the surface of some of the pits and ditches cut into the chalk. The resulting spoil was checked and any finds salvaged.

Quantity
The total weight of the bone assemblage from Martin’s Quarry is 23.2107 kilos (23210.7 grams). This includes fragmentary, unidentifiable bone which was weighed and discarded.
   There was no specific fragment count but this can be extrapolated from the digital list of analysed bone.
The assemblage is currently stored in 5 plastic boxes (45cms x38cms) in the FAAG store in New Ash Green.

Species
The hand collected remains include the bones of cattle (Bos taurus), sheep/goat (Ovis/Capra), 
pig (Sus sp.), horse (Equus sp.), dog (Canis familiaris), deer (Cervus elaphus) and bird (Aves).

State of Preservation
Preservation is generally good with some fragmentation and little surface erosion.

Dating/phasing
The preliminary phasing indicates that the assemblage originates in the late Iron Age and continues into the early Roman period. Dating was obtained from examination of the associated pottery.

Features/Deposits The bone was excavated from a series of pits and ditches.

A few butchery marks are present on the following bones. It is possible that some have been missed.

   No spreadsheet has been created showing frequency, measurable and fusion evidence but this information is, in part, contained in the list above.
   However, a spreadsheet has been created showing the weight of bone from each context broken down by species and total weight of bone recovered for each species. (See Appendix 2)
