W.I. History of Ash and Ridley from Earliest Records to 1957 - Page 81

Second World War continued

Finally came a Victory Show, again the work of Mr Bert Graham, in which Pamela was also one of the caste. This was entitled "Let's be Gay".
At Christmas time 1944 Pamela gathered a few of her friends together and went Carol Singing and collected £2 8s 0d for the Red Cross. After the war she became the Secretary of the Meopham Division of the Young Farmers Club. Pamela was trained for a teacher. She is now Mrs Balcomb living in Abeokuta, Nigeria and is teaching coloured girls from 12-16 years of age most of whom are going in for nursing.
One of the civilian hardships was rationing which started in 1940 and did not end until 1950. Food, clothes, household equipment of all kinds including linen and furniture were all controlled. The weekly allowance of certain foods was as follows:-
Meat 1s 6d worth   Cheese 2 ozs    Margarine 4 ozs
Sugar 8 ozs             Bacon 2 ozs     Sweets 2 ozs
Tea 4 ozs             Butter 2 ozs     Tinned foods 8 points
                                                          (often only 1 tin)
