want to give, however, the teacher one more chance to put things right more or less. No one but a strong man could do well in this position. He has been here for 25 years and has no one to back him up whatever. The chief manager is a Fox-hunting Parson, and there appears to be nobody who ever goes near the place. The school is also too full for working purposes.’
   By 1910 the request for water had been fulfilled, but the new taps were not immediately successful as the water pressure was too high, at the same meeting the managers decided to insure the children against accidents under The Employers Liability Act.
   In October 1911, there is an enquiry into the alleged treatment of one Florence Webb by the

Headmaster, Mr Meyers. It was reported that he caned the child and put salt into her mouth. Mr Meyers denied the charge, and accused the foster parents of maltreating the girl. The matter was not decided at the enquiry, but left to the K.E.C. However before they could act a second complaint was received on the 30th October against Mr Meyers, regarding his treatment of Jessie Webb. Mr Meyers admitted that the accusations were correct with the result that on December 6th, he and his wife were asked to resign.
   Mr Meyers’ dismissal brought immediate reaction from the villagers: Mr Goodwin drew up a petition and everyone except one signed it.16  There was a stormy meeting
